G'day Folks, How are you all?
Well here is my first tractor, 1954 E1A New Major, I am quite over the moon, with past few months, researching and reading Forums, due to work commitments, I won't be picking her up till mid this month. She will be a working here on our property, but will get some TLC between jobs i do have a question for you more knowledgeable folks, she is fitted with a raised pto, now from my understanding, this allows me to turn on/off the pto with out effecting the Hydraulics ? Or am I confused. All so would like to know what the flat bar lever is for on clutch side ?

Thanks
Have a safe one folks

Hi: My understanding of the Raised pto is it allows you to use more modern equipment so pto shaft is not at an adverse angle when connected. I could be wrong, but I do not think you can turn the raised pto unit on and off.

Like the other member said, the flat lever shuts off the pto and also the hydraulics, as the hydraulic pump is run internally by the pto shaft.

I have a 1963 Super major, and had to get used to compensate for no hydraulics when clutch is depressed, as i run a front and back blade for snow clearing.

Mine has the two stage clutch, but it does not seem to work at the first stage, which allows for changing gears without stopping the pto. I just have to live with it, as i do not have the equipment to split the tractor to see what the problem is. Splitting a super is a major task, as these tractors were built like tanks and are very heavy.

I had a 1958 Major Diesel and needed it to drive JD double chop forage harvester. The standard English PTO speed was about 740 (or so) RPM. The USA JD needed 540 RPM. This all meant that in order to run the chopper at correct speed the engine speed was too low for enough power, or,conversely, the chopper was over revved if full power was attained. Enter optional Raised PTO. It reduced the PTO speed to 540 at full engine working speed. It has a counter shaft in it with a small gear on it in order to maintain correct rotation direction (opposite engine direction and clockwise viewed from rear of tractor). The one I had was fitted with a normal gear lever, easily reached from the seat, to put it in and out of gear, so hydraulics could be run and used with the PTO stopped. It worked well but I did have to replace the small gear once. (It does a lot of work!)

On my 58 Major it was "Live Drive" and had the two staged clutch. On it the first stage of pedal depression stopped travel and second stage stopped both PTO and hydraulics

My 58 Major was labeled "Live Drive" and the first staged of clutch pedal depression stopped only the travel while the second stage stopped also the PTO and hydraulics
