Dexta vs Super Dexta, and Major

Hello all,

This is a question of just general interest about these tractors, but are the Dexta and the Super Dexta totally different ? Or do they share some of the same parts, like centerhousing, transmission, axles, and then have different engines, and I guess they have a different hood too.

And how about the Major, do they share any parts with the Dexta or Super Dexta ?

The only thing I can tell you is about the engine. The main difference is that the Super Dexta is a Ford/Perkins engine with a slightly greater displacement than the Dexta 152.7 vs 144. CI. The Simms injector pump on the Dexta is pneumatically governed while that on the S. Dexta is mechanical. Basically the engine has 39 horsepower and later 45 hp.. The 144ci engine has 32-35 hp depending on who wrote the article.
I think the gears are the same except on early Dextas (ratio changed) and the Super has the two stage clutch as standard and not an option.

I just pulled the head on a Dexta and it looks like it was bored out for the larger sleeves. Early sleeves were pressed in. I think some Super Dextas may have slip fit sleeve with a flange, but I am not sure of this.

The rest can be filled in or corrected by someone who has used or seen both tractors.

The Major is an entirely different animal. The major preceeded the Dexta and was produced at the same time until 1952. It is a heavier tractor and has only three forward gears vs six on the Dexta and S.D.. The engines were four cylinder and finally 6 cylinder, but weren't all that powerful. Must have been very low compression on the gas. The diesel I am not sure of.

OOPS! The Major was produced up until 1952 and did not overlap the Dexta and S.D. as I said in the previous post.

The New Major, Power Major and finally the Super Major all had four cylinder engines and went from 3.3-3.6 liters and were available in gas, diesel. They have 6 speed trannies, but again weighed at least a 1000 pounds and more than the Dextas.

As Deutz says the Major and the Dexta were two different tractors, the Dexta being smaller. The Dexta also came with a petrol
engine option as well as the diesel after 1960 until production ceased in July 1964. From 1962 both the Dexta and the Super Dexta
had Simms Minimec pumps and dif lock, the only real difference between them was the engine HP and the tin work.

All Dexta engines have press-in sleeves which have to be re-bored after installation, however the block can be machined to take the
later Perkins sleeve with a flange. Dexta sleeves are no longer available so most suppliers sell the Perkins 152 sleeve to replace
them. This means boring a Dexta block to fit them and fitting 152 pistons and the upper flange to hold the liners requires the block to be machined to fit.

Thank you. Did any of the Dexta/Super Dexta, (New) Major, Power Major, Super Major develop into the 1000 series, 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000 ? I mean, like sharing major castings, transmission, axles trumpets, and centerhousings or other parts ?

I was aware of that the Dexta / Super Dexta have different engines, and at least a different front end sheet metal, but I have only been close to a Super Dexta, never a Dexta.

Bill, I think that the only difference in the Dexta and the Super Dexta engine is just displacement and Simms pump type. The block, head, crankshaft, stroke, and rods are the same, just larger pistons which gives the a3.152 a slightly higher compression ratio. Also same vertical injectors since they are both indirect injection.
I am not sure about the injector timing marks though.

Except,
There is no correlation between the perkins and ford engines is there?
Other than they did use the perkins in the Fordsons?
A lot of folks still think the 3 cyl engine used in the 2/3/4000 tractors were Perkins but they were not. They were a complete new Ford design.
