Have a 1963 fordson super major and the
3 point hitch is stuck in the upright
position and the hydraulic pump is
whining as though its trying to raise
it more. Doesnt matter what i do with
flow control or up/down lever still
stuck. Itll drop a bit after a few days
but as soon as start tractor it goes
right back up. Any help be great. Fluid
level is good.

You will need to draw the plug out not drive it out from the rear as this will damage the valve. Polish with metal polish. Under no circumstances replace the "o" ring with anything other than one from Ford/New Holland, if you cannot get one leave it off.

Check that the return filter is attached to the return pipe with the back pressure valve. Sometimes the valve drops off and without it creating 12 psi back pressure the unload valve will not work.

This is a link to Fordson Tractor Pages Wiki. You may need the code "fordsontractorpages" and password "dotty" to get in. It is an article I wrote on the hydraulic system of the Dexta range and the Super Major. It may help you understand how things work under the cover.

It is not too bad a job to get the lift off but remember there are two hidden nuts, one either side, under the lift arms. A top cover gasket and "O" rings are all you need for the unload valve job but if you take the ram cylinder off then you will need the *O* ring set for the Auxiliary Service Chest and the ram cylinder.

It is best that you have some form of lifting gear, I suffer from a bad back and put it down to lifting off many of these and other Ford tractor lifts.

Thanks so much for the insight. Could you tell me what this valve is? The one that is a big bolt?the one thats left of drop rate.
