Dexta Battery Cable

I recently bought a running 1961 dexta positive ground tractor. When I first got it I messed around on it for a day and it was idling high and smoking just a little. Did a little research and figured I need a governor diapragm so i ordered one. In the meantime I noticed that i had left the key on. I tried to start it and it just clicked. Tried charging the battery and same thing. Put a new battery in it and same thing. Clicks once then theres no indicator lights or anything. I found I had a bad connection on the battery cable that connects to the - side of the battery which runs to the starter, so i put a new cable end on it. Tried to start it again and my + cable which runs to the block started smoking and the insulation melted off of it. Both cables felt really hot. What could be my problem?

Can you turn the engine over by hand?

If no crank handy, put it in the highest gear gear and rock it back and forth and see if the fan moves to rule out a stuck engine or jammed starter drive.

My starter was shorted, so I pulled it apart and its toast. Got a new one on the way. I made sure the engine turns freely. Thinking I have a bad solenoid that fried my starter when I left the key on. Does anyone have the correct wiring diagram for the dexta? I have a repair manual but im not sure if I should be using diagram 95 or 96? The previous owner did a lot of incorrect wiring on it, and I would like to put everything back to how it is supposed to be. Thanks

I don't think your solenoid shorted initially. I had the same thing happen. I think when the starter shorts it welds the solenoid contacts. My battery cable went like a lit fuse. When I took the starter apart I found it needed new brushes and holders. The armature and field windings were okay. Lucas "Prince of Darkness".
