Fordson Super Major VS Power Major

I am working on a Fordson Super Major currently either a 1961 or 1962 year 4 cylinder diesel. The parts book calls for two o-rings on each liner for the Super Major. After taking the engine apart we found that there is only one o-ring on each liner. I was not able to find any blow up of parts for the Power Major but when looking online a rebuild kit for a power major calls for only one o-ring on each liner and two on each liner for the super major. The engine itself was made between 1959-1960 according to the serial number. I am wondering if the power major and super major engines were basically the same engine with slight modifications? We are almost to the point of ordering parts but I need to make sure I know which tractor I am dealing with before I can order any of the parts.

Any information on these tractors would be much appreciated!

Only a New Performance Super after 1963 had two "O" rings as standard although you might find some on late 1962 tractors. Your engine is a Power Major engine, only the hydraulic system and brakes were different between a Power and a Super pre late 1962.

Watch the liners, 1963 liners with two "O" rings, one top and one at the bottom are not a good fit in the earlier engine although some after maraket companies supply just the later one. The later liners are slightly bigger on the outside and have to be forced in rather than just pushed in by hand.

I always use hand soap to lubricate the bottom of the liner where it fits in the "O" ring.
 
Majorman, I'm working with the original poster. Is the top o-ring for the later liners installed in the liner itself? There is no counterbore in the block that I can see, like there is in the bottom of the block.

No, the top "O" ring is a thin one installed in the block. If the tractor is pre 1963 there is a 95% chance it will not have one.

If you are working on the liners check that the outer part protrudes from the face of the block .002" to .004"

If you have a machined area around the top of the liner about 1" wide just below the retaining lip you have the liner for the two "O" rings and they will be very tight to fit and can roll the lower seal out of the grove.
 
If you have a kit for the two ring liner the sleeves have a bigger outside diameter and they will be very tight to fit into the block. You may also push the bottom "O" ring out of position as you fit them. They will go in but it is not something I would recommend.

I have another question for you, was the 64 block different? I haven't been able to find too much information? Found out the block was cracked, so we are currently searching for a new used one!
 
No, but you will need a Power/Super block. There are differences with the early Major block.

Back in the day we used to put the later block in everything but it was easier to upgrade than to downgrade. It has been done though, on another forum we have been trying to work out a tractors age and it turns out to be a Super with a 1954 block/engine.

Blocks for that engine were being produced new into the 1980's, Ford sent the whole production line to Spain to a factory that they part owned with Massey Ferguson and a lot of the modern spare parts like cranks still come from that factory. Ebro was the tractor.

Where is your block cracked?
 
The block is cracked between #1 & #2, and between #2 & #3. I have a local shop that said he could try and fix it but it sounds like it is going to be expensive, and we have possibly found a used one the people are sending it to the machine shop to make sure that it is a good block before we buy it.
 
If the crack is at the top it is not a problem, if it is at the bottom then it is. Some of these tractors ran for years with cracks between the cylinders at the top.

The Perkins engines like the P6 and L4 mostly have cracked blocks in that area but it was not a common thing with Major engines
