dexta starter

Posting this message in case anyone ever searches for info. on replacing a starter on the dexta. I've read several older posts which were very helpful but wanted to post my efforts. I put new brushes on my dexta's original starter when I did a rebuild several years ago(8 years?)or so. The starter worked good(or so i thought). but the last year its been a fight to get her to turn over. The cable to the starter would get very warm. I thought the battery was just weak(no alternator or jenny), i just charged up every couple of months for cranking. anyway, finally got fed up and bought the new starter (non-original). installed, 15 minutes later, i used the oringinal pos cable bolted together from older solenoid, and just jumped a 'wire' to touch to the cable to for my temporary switch.

well, it is unbelievable!! Instant starting is an understatement! I would not have believed it would have made 'that' much of a difference, but the difference is amazing. i may now be able to go a year between charges!
thanks for those who post here,
david

Believe the original starter was 1.8Kw, and the new "key start" models are either, 2.6 or 2.8.
Last one "key start" I used was 2.8
I bought a gear reduction starter that is 3.4, but I haven't really used it. Did connect battery and spin, and it was faster than all other starters.
I am putting the gear reduction on one in my shop, that I have been giving a total re-do. The engine was rebuilt years ago and "bump" it would start with key start models.
I also now only use non-corrosive type batteries, like Optima or Oddessy, etc. My cables are made with 00 welding cable. What a difference. I take my battery tray out and make bottom retainers for a neat fit.

While not original, for show, it is better than new with these new style items.

'Bump' and she starts!!!

Thanks to both your efforts. More power is once again proven to be good for the cure.

Do charge that battery monthly as a fully charged battery is going to last longer. All wet cell batteries self discharge at a slow rate, so even sitting unused, they will lose charge and degenerate internally.

David,
I converted my Dexta's to Optima's. No winter battery droop. No corroded cables. Take out the battery tray and make a simple retainer that bolts in. Real nice.

Made all new cables out of '00' welding cable with soldered on ends, Looks good, works great.
My Dexta's start like new engines.
