Just bought a Super Major. Its registered on a Q plate which makes insuring a bit of a pain so trying to establishh when it was manufactured. Have found the engine no. which according to the information I have found is a Power major mkIII manufactured in Aug 58. Cant find a chassis # on the tractor Any suggestions on any other ways I could find the year of manufacture so I coulld get it off a Q plate? Thanks

Hi
Can you give us the number on the motor you
have.
Powers and supers only had the engine number as
the chassis no. some of the info for serial
no's guys put on here is wrong, so don't know
if you have the same source online or not. I
can check my info that is believed to be from a
reputable source.
if the tractor actually is a super, the only
other way to date it is casting codes on
components.
that engine no could be the reason it's on a Q
plate. it lost it's true identity with the
motor swap.
Does this tractor have brake housings right up
against the transmission housing or are they on
long shafts between the wheel and back of the
fenders if like that it could be a power with
wrong parts.
Mr Heinz has been creating 57 varieties of
majors for a lot of years sadly with parts
swaps from all years of majors L.O.L.

Hi Thanks for the comments.
Outward appearance is of a super major ie headlights in the radiator grills and super major emblem on the cowling. Engine number is 1482407 which from my register looks like a Power Major Aug 1958 so it could be a Power Major engine in a Super Major body. It needs a good clean up but once I can see through the grime I could take some photos of relevant bits if that would help.

Hi
I am taking a guess that the only country to issue Q plates is the U.K or some parts of Ireland.
Vehicles that are road registered over there have a licence plate the same as North america. But a given year like 89 would be an F and sequence of numbers /letters denoting year and place vehicle was listed. if this number/ and document was lost for any reason, or the vehicle body changed due to accident. The original vin denoting vehicle manufacture year is lost. then a Q licence plate is issued to allow road registration. or maybe this tractor never was licenced in the day or had an old number from 1960 but the number is not good and the motor change makes it hard to date the tractor.
Q plates used to be popular. But now you can get an age related number if you can prove the year it was built.

This is what he's trying to do. Hope that makes sense. I was born in the U.K and grew up with this system and the letter number sequence changes over the years. but been away to many years to remember exact sequences.

Hi
looks like your info on serial number is close enough to what you say. can you send me a private message. Email should be open in the message box here. I'll reply and Give you more information as to what you need to do and where to look, as I don't want to break forum rules, and cause problems helping you here now.
Regards Robert

Hi - Robert is spot on with his reply. In the UK when the exact age of a vehical has not been established (lost paperwork, modifications etc) a registration # starting with Q is given. Unfortunately insurance companies don't like Q plated vehicles and often will not insure. If I can establish the date of manufacture (usually requires finding the same dates for two major componants eg engine and gearbox ) then a date registration and normal number plate can be issued.

Hi If you would like to email me I will send you the
name of my insurer. I've never had a problem with Q
plate insurance because he only deals with 'Veteran
Vehicles'.
I will also give you the name and address etc of a
guy who has steered me through the registration
process on several occasions.
The engine and chassis #no's were the same. So you
have an engine No That should do the trick.

Hi Mike
If his tractor is a super and has a 58 power motor fitted, then super casting no's on everything else for 1960 plus. Won't this cause the same kinda problem he has now. that it's not classed as a 60 onwards super due to wrong engine number. Then won't age relate it due to the parts. or may back date it to 58 which won't be correct later if he ever shows or sells it ?
Regards Robert

Wherever this goes if its as you suggest it will not be absolutely right, But it will get around the "Q" plate problem. As for showing etc the way I see it, Its just part of the history of the tractor. but overall what yo are saying is seriously fair comment. Mike
