Can the fuel pump work with the manual lever but not from the engine? Is there something on the back side of the pump that can fail? I have not taken it off yet. thanks.

yes there is a fulcrum on the back of the fuel pump that works off of the cam shaft

it's very unlikly it would break but could be worn down to the point that it doesn't work correctly

or the pivot pin could be broken or dislogded

most likly and most comnon problem is the diaphram is wore out

Hi
I have only ever seen what I found on a tractor once, having worked on many majors.
When you remove the lift pump look inside the hole at the cam shaft, if the arm is good on the pump.
The cam shaft has a lobe on to move the arm as said. the pump drive on the cam should be about 3/4" wide. you may find the pump arm has worn about 1/4 or more width of the cam making it smaller or near round.
This then causes no or way less movement of the pump arm.
While the pumps of you can also move the pump arm and get an idea if it is working also.
Regards Robert
