need help with 4wd front axel parts

I have a 1977 ford 5600 4wd that was made and sold in England that has a front axle assembly that I believe was made in Belgium. I need a right axle and right side inner u-joint carrier, ect. I can not find a parts breakdown for this axle to give part numbers. This axle is not from a gmc 6x6 that I read about on this forum but is close to that style. Even a contact for a tractor salvage in the UK or any leads to info would be greatly appreciated. I could try to post a picture if that would help. Thanks for reading, Bud

Pictures please. Before anyone can help, or provide advice, they'd need to know what axle you have. There were 3 if not four type axles used.

I can tell you from experience the FNH site will not show a parts list or diagram.

I have a 4000 with the Schindler axle, and while I have found parts, there is no list, and no diagram. Parts are parts, either SAE or Metric.
Good place to start is what kind of hardware bolts are in the axle. SAE or metric?

Thanks Wayne for replying. The hardware is metric. I will try to get pics. THe outer end of the axle is flared out with a bore through it that a pin is inserted. the ends of the pin are stepped down to go in a universal housing, well hope my pictures come through.

My 30% response is that it is a Schindler. The knuckles look like a schindler, and the axle. So I am 70% unsure.
Bad news is there is no "source" for Schindler parts, other than wrecking yards. Good news is that the basic stuff and hardware is available if you compare and find it.
I am in contact with several Shindler axle owners who broke them big, and with skilled welders and machinist, and available repair parts, they came back to life or are coming.
Which part is broke?

Re-read your post, That u-joint carrier does not look like my axle. At least from what I can see outside. Mine takes cross u-joints that bolt in to flanges with bolts that are laced together to prevent loosening. I said I was 70% unsure. Hopefully someone will chime in.

This double u-joint had broke before, I made the two bearing caps that you see in the picture, one in it"s place and the other on it"s side. I found the metric ss pins that I used for needle bearings. As far as repairing goes I can machine a steel bushing and weld it on the end of the axle. The hard part is to make the bearing carrier which is to the right of hub ,below the axle and above the connecting pin that goes inside the axle. That piece is broke in half and made out of cast steel, type 17CrNIM06? so the bores that the connector pin goes through with 3mmx16mm needle bearings seams to be cased harden not to mention time consuming to machine. Because of it"s design I think there is not enough room to weld a yoke to the end of axle and use a regular u- joint as I seen on other axles. I would really like to find a tractor salvage here or in the uk if there is a place. please help! Bud

You will get good advice here on this forum, but the other component you asked for was wrecking yards. Good advice will rise to the level of what vendor made the axle, and what machine shop to use, and what vendor sells the u-joint spiders and hardward.
You most certainly will not find a Ford 4wd tractor axle in a US wrecking yard. I have, though seen axles listed in Britian.
I have one of these axles on my tractor, as stated and I have chased this gopher down the hole more than once. Mine wasn't broke, I was mainly trying to help another guy with his axle. I have had my hopes raised by those who said they could help, only to wait and get more rhetoric. I have contacted people in Britian, and I learned that if I used the forum I gave you, I could find a guy on the ground there who could point me to a Britian whose dad made these conversions, etc and I could get parts.

BTW, I routinely order parts from Britian, they will get here.

Bottom line. Great friends and good advice on YTMAG. Seems like you need an advocate in Britian to find a part in a wrecking yard.
Just my 2 pennies of advice.

The axle housing looks just like my Schindler, even the knuckles look the same.
Generally, I need to look at the axle end at the lugs. Schindler's are flat, have nothing sticking out of the rim, whereas the other conversions have bolts and protruding axle stems outside the lug nuts and rim.

Its the ujoint couplers that threw me. My Schindler uses a metric bolting u-joint spider on each side, that bolt to inner and outer axles.

Those Britians on the World Forum have them ID'd by photo, various times.

Good luck.

seems to me that there is a guy in western Canada that has a bunch of parts . I got a starter from him for my 5000 Super Major. can't remember his name and as I am away don't have paperwork

this is the current Roadless four wheel drive parts source. The site also has tractor register, history and alot of other current info

Doesn't look like a Roadless setup to me.

OK, I blew the picture up, and I see the U-Joint Caps are still "bolted" to the outer axle flange. Having interpreted that, I reverse my probablility it is a Schindler. 70% sure it is a Schindler, 30% doubt.
$chindler...

"...The hardware is metric. I will try to get pics. THe outer end of the axle is flared out with a bore through it that a pin is inserted. the ends of the pin are stepped down to go in a universal housing, well hope my pictures come through..."

The only issue I have had with my axle, is my steering knuckles kept coming loose (both sides). I replaced every bolt and washer only to have them loosen again. I replaced washers with NordLock washers and my problem is behind me. Gone, permanently fixed. I now have one U-joint, although it is laced, that the bolt is loose, so I need to disassemble mine, tighten it and quite possibly, while in there, I will replace the U-Joint.
Now, having said that; let me state that in all the years I have been working this issue: looking for Schindler axle parts: I have not found one part number posted anywhere, on any forum. (I did get a personal email from a guy with part #, but they were not OEM, only the number the warehouse he got them from databased them with.
While there have been numerous comments, no actual part number help has been provided.
Please be the first to post the part numbers of the parts you find, and replace, if indeed it turns out your axle is a $chindler. There are 5-10 of these axles in the US, fitting Ford 3000-8000 tractors. You'll help out all these fellas.
Pictures of my axle

This is a Schindler front axle as fitted to my late 70's early 80's Ford 8100. Looks different but suffer the same sort of problems. I need to get some engineering work done on the bottom wishbone pivot on mine. Engineer hopes to bore it out larger, machine and weld in a spacer then re-fit new bearing.

I am confused. The bearing caps, one connected and one on its side are components of the new U-Joint (if it is a $chindler) and if the inner axle shaft and the outer axle shaft are good, all you will need is the u-joint. My curiosity, is, is this the original style u-joint, and the replacment u-joints look more like the one's in the URL. I found in my research that the Schindler had a much better turning radius than the other designs, and the j-joints in your picture look like they flex well. Not sure the new cross-style u-joint turn as deep. I am curious if the newer u-joints are not the replacment. I of course would also buy new bolts, with holes in head for wire-lacing. So, based on the cap design, which mounting type do you have and what is the diagonal measurement?
Anyone else have thoughts on this?
What type U Joint do you have

ote="WayneB"](reply to post at 06:38:26 04/24/14) [/quote] First of all I want to say thank you for all the info, replies, and pictures from all of you. I suspect the reason this is so difficult is because it was Ford UK's first attempt to build a front axel in house using other manufacturers' components, ( possibly Schindlers) . Soon after that Ford USA designed their own front axel which uses the reduction gears at the outer end of the axel for which a parts breakdown is availalbe and used on the first generation front ends in the USA and later UK models. Wayne, to answer your question, the 2 bearing caps you mentioned in the picture are the ones that I made which bolt to a 2 inch ring with 4 bolts and nuts and 2 identical bearing caps on the other end. That ring has grease ports and fittings that lube all bearings. The inner axel in the picture, upper right, is broken where the pin connects to the inner bearing housing. The inner bearing housing which is broken in half is in the center right of the picture. Thanks, Wayne, for the additions resources to locate the parts. Bud
