also are these tractors generally hard to start cold ?
once its warm it starts instally .

Hi:

Yes they are hard to start when the weather is cold.

You will need a block heater, or a bottom rad hose heater.

Just plug in for a couple hours before you are ready to start.

Welcome to the world of old tractors. Hope you
have some good fun and stay safe doing it.
I seem to think a dexta should have a 12 volt
glow plug/ fuel heater starting aid, in the inlet
manifold to assist with cold starts.
it should be activated by a big horn type push button on
the dash panel, the element will be screwed into the intake manifold and should have a big heavy gauge wire on it, and maybe a small fuel line on there as well to feed diesel into the fire. when the heaters used.
I think That motor should be indirect injection.
that's probably why it starts better when warm. It needs
the heat in the cylinder head to get the diesel to
burn properly during injection and compression.
Been about 25 years since i had a wrench on a
dexta. Will be a good little tractor if everything
works like it should.

thanks guys and im using the heater and injector to start it when cold spins alot then fires and smokes for bout a min even in 70* weather but once that clears out it starts real quick till the next day
was just wondering if that was normal or if my heater was bout shot
also what kind of amperage does the heater draw if anyone knows
wire looks to be 14-16 gauge to it thought that seemed kinda small?

There is a relationship between hard starting/cranking time and cylinder ring wear. That relationship last with Dexta's until they wear until you get blowby and run-away.
A rebuilt engine will fire readily at starting RPMs even cold.
I have a rebuild Dexta that all you have to do is bump the starter and its running. I have several others that you grind on them like making sausage, heat them for a minute to get them to run.
Another trick I have learn is the original 1.7kw starter can be replaced with the 2.6KW key start stater and that tired engine - bump she starts- I found a Perkins gear reduction starter that will even beat that.

After they are running, there is little difference in power (for now) between the fresh and more tired engines.

Think I have addressed the answer and the work-around to hard starting, without even discussing glow plugs.

I called DB Electrical a year or so ago and they provided this part number. When I ordered mine, it was $88 with free shipping. Now inflation has it at $119
That is still cheaper than any Dexta starter.
Call DB or message them before you buy is my advice.
