1958 Fordson Major Diesel

I am thinking about buying this tractor (see link below). Mainly cause I need a 4WD tractor. How hard is it to switch this over to 4WD? Also, when I go look at the tractor is there any particular problems I should be looking at with these tractors or with the 4WD axle? If the ad is accurate the price seems decent (much less than I expect to pay for a 4WD tractor).

I would want to see the serial number before I would believe that is a 1958 tractor. Looks more like a 1953/54 with those badges on the bonnet.

The only FWD for those tractors was made by Roadless and very few were built. If you find one be prepared to pay nearly double the price of the tractor for it before you start to fit it.

Whoops! Did not see the other pictures. That is indeed a Roadless and, if the axle is in good working condition it will be a snip at that price.

The axle was made from ex-wd GM truck axles originally by Selene in Italy and fitted to early E27N Majors, Roadless took a licencing agreement and assembled the tractors at Hounslow nr London, England. You could also buy them as a kit to fit to your own Major.

Check carefully that the dif. and halfshafts are in the front axle as these are the weak points of the design. There must be some reason that it has been removed. If it is all there and working it would make between £10000 and £15000 on this side of the pond.

Hi Majorman, that tractor is a long way from home. Are you going to the East of England tractor show at the Norfolk showground next weekend. I hope to be there with my unrestored 1923 IH 10-20 tractor. My friends from our tractor club should be taking the dancing Does display team. MJ

Hi MJ, yes I will be there with a Petrol Dexta and a Petrol/Kerosene E1ADKN. Possibly with some display boards from Fordsontractorpages. We have been every year and reckon its one of the best shows but no well supported. The burger vans nearly outnumbered the punters last year. :0)

We are normally on the Blue Force Stand but do not know where we will be this year.

Shout if you recognise us.

Hi Majorman, hope to see you there as I am also a Blue Force member. Are you coming to the Blue Force 1000 show on Newark Showground in June. I am organising the road run on Saturday night for them. See you at the weekend. MJ

I am organising a display of spark ignition Fordsons from 1952 to 1970. We have a couple of petrol Dextas, a petrol Super Major, the E1ADKN and a petrol 2000 so far.

See you over the weekend.

Brian
