fordson? for sale

Hi, I think I came across what I think is a Fordson Major diesel for sale with backhoe and
front loader. Kinda interested in it. No idea if it runs. Owner wants $3500 for it. He says the engine was rebuilt and has less than 500hrs on it, but the starter doesn't work and needs replacement. Not sure now if he has the part or not. The tractor was last run about 2 yrs ago. The owner wasn't actually present but I got this info through a coworker of his that called him. I think he said it was 1965, but didn't say exactly what model. I searched the bellhousing around the battery, as well as the block but couldn't find a serial number anywhere. It looks like it has 6F and 2R tranny. If it has the high/low transmission, where
would the shifter be located? Does it slow the pto like a sherman in
a Ford? Originally thought it would be nice to be able to remove the backhoe and use the pto for farm implements, but noticed no lift arms or toplink. So this tractor is dedicated to backhoe work I guess, or is there a conversion available for using a 3pt? THe backhoe is so heavy I doubt I could take it off anyway... unlike the backhoe on my Ford 8n. Here are some pics. Is this a Fordson Power Major? Is the price in the right ballpark? Probably dumb questions, but I know next to nothing about Fordsons. Thanks!

This tractor doesn't know what it is, it's self lol. it has power major steering box, fuel tank, and gauges for 1958 - 60 or super major till 64 .
It is not a super though so 60 and before.

The gauges in the box under the steering wheel are from 1952 - 58 when the power major change came in.
The high low lever is the lever to the right of the gauges in the tin box. there are no badges on the hood it would either say diesel fordson major, fordson major or fordson power major.

look on the battery bulkhead, on the motor side of it up by the top. There should be a plate there, before 58 ish it had a serial number there which is engine number.
That should also be matching either on front right of motor stamped on pad under no 1 injector, by the joint of block to head, or if before about 55-56 ish stamped on the block flange, top by the starter mounting. if no number is stamped on the bulkhead plate, it just says product of ford or something close, it is a power major.
Find that engine number and it might give a clue to date if original motor is fitted. If i got that number I can date the motor.
Kinda thinking this might be a bit of a parts put together tractor with the gauges added.


Putting the hyds on if you got no internal pto pump is expensive.as you need a pump and all other parts from a donor tractor, then re fitting the backhoe might be a problem with 3 point hitch top on also..


If it was me I would want it running and driving for $3500. There could be issues with the motor through standing, and a hole pile of other things.
The only parts that fit this are from majors, nothing goes over to 801 or those later 000 series fords after 65 when the 6x series came out. North America had a ford 5000 diesel from 62 ish-64, painted with blue frame and cream tin and wheels, some parts from that will fit like the motor, hood, front cowl and steering and a few odd parts, But the rear end, brakes /hyds is is totally different. all parts before 60 super majors will fit with some swapping of things like steering box and fuel tanks if needed. Basic parts are the same on them.
hope this might help a bit. If you need more info ask and I"ll see what I can do. Don"t know anything about the loader and hoe, but the tractors kinda my thing. I have about 16 of this style here.I'm gonna guess this is a power major. It has the correct power major hand throttle fitted.

Not too familiar with fordsons but the one lever is before the trans so I'm thinking it could be a sherman reverser?

There is no Sherman reverser on these tractors. the stick at the front is the main gears 3 forward and 1 reverse. to get 6 forward and 2 reverse speeds you use the high low range lever on the right side of the bottom gauges, to double up the 3 &amp; 1. The gearbox is a crash type with no syncro's or reverser, and needs clutching for every change of gear, and to clutch and stop moving between forward and reverse gears. The lever on the left by the clutch pedal puts the pto drive in gear.

The price you are considering may not be too bad, IF you can get just one reasonable project done with it, you could write it off. Hiring a contractor with a track excavator might cost just as much. I bought a similar rig, with many welds on it, with the same claims as to engine and starter. I paid about half as much. I switched starters and it ran OK drove it 10 miles home. Starters aren"t that bad of a deal. You probably need a new battery. Check to see if fluids are full and clean. Bad hoses are a possibility.
After a short while, I resold mine to someone else who needed to do a project. He got the new battery and starter with it for $200 more than I paid for it. Off course, he got to see it operate first.
