oil question on power majors

does anyone know what type of oil works best in the transmission and rear end of a power major diesel with the hydraulic 3 point lift, does just plain universal tranny tractor hydraulic fluid suffice or is there a better choice that optimizes the hydraulic lift

I use 80-90 in all my Majors. We have always used heavy oil, even in our cold Wisconsin winters. 3 of them we bought new in the late 50's and have never had any troubles.

Had a Power Major from 1959 until 1999 and always used 90 gear oil in the gearbox & diff there were
no problems.
Have been informed that modern gear oils are not
suitable for Fordson GB/Diffs due to additives
causing corrosion of the bronze bushes etc.

Im sorry, we do not use 80W-90 its just 90W. It must be GL-1 spec to be yellow metal safe. I buy it from Napa, the part # is 65-205 and will run about $25.00 for a 5 gal pail. I have heard that it can be had at Wal-Mart to for a little cheaper.

The book says to use 20w-30 in the engine transmission and differential. Since 20w-30 is pretty hard to get these days, I use 15w-40.
Your rear end is also your hydraulic reservoir. You wouldn't use 90w in your hydraulics, would you?

The correct oil should always be a 90w mineral oil. If you are operating in a colder climate you could also blend it with trans/hydraulic oil, I should think a 50/50 blend would work nicely. Before the advent of the multi weight oil we cut the 90w with diesel oil to make it more viscous with no ill effects.

Cheers, Graham

Sir, My predecessors wrote the manual you are referring to, you see I was employed by Ford UK as a engineer from 1959-1978. The manual does state that a 20w-30 is suitable but please remember that Ford had adopted the 90W standard as suitable for all models.

Service letter July 1959 states: Gearbox, Rear Axle and Hydraulics oil specifications have changed. Now all models from 1952 onwards use:

S.A.E 30HD or S.A.E. 20W/30W in all the above at all temperatures.

Oil Capacities.

Gearbox .. 4.5 imp.gal .. 20.43 lt
Less PTO .. 4.25 imp.gal .. 19.32 lt

Rear axle .. 9 imp.gal .. 40.91 lt

I prefer to use the pre 1959 oil specification of 90w in my Major collection, but you may chose to use the later alternative.

Respectfully, Graham Barrington, Stamford England

Its been a while since I looked at this forum. I didn't know that there were any more responses. Thanks for posting that service letter. That's exactly what I was referring to.
