new starter works when angled in only

After hours of fitting my new starter (kind that has to be re-wired) on my Supr Dexta, the starter gear only engages if i shim the side toward me out with 1/4" shims with the other side flush--is there an adjustment screw on the starter that will move the inside of the starter toward the tractor so i don't have to do this?

Actually, i meant that the 1/4" shimes PULL the starter shaft away from the flywheel, pull it toward me and back a little I guess. The starter fits in fine and bolts down tight, will not budge unless you shim the outer side 1/4 " and I'm sure this will not work in the long run since it exposes a 1/4" gap--I cannot visually tell the difference between the original and new one as to the way they fit, all measures out the same, including the gear that the starter gear is displaced, etc.

Do you mean you have a starter that has it's own solenoid, instead of the lever action original with separate solenoid?.
I wonder if the drive gear arm is adjusted wrong and the solenoid engages the drive to late.
on the old lever engage the motor would turn slightly as the gear engaged the fly wheel. if the engage switch was wrong the starter would grind the flywheel, trying to spin the gear in to late.
If you got that new type mounted solenoid starter, the engage arm pivot bolt, might have a cam on it.
if it does try turning that bolt and see if it gets worse or better depending where you turn the bolt.
This is kinda hard to tell you without being there and seeing what you got, if that screw doesn't have the cam , the solenoid might have adjustment slots on the mounting,or on the linkage to the drive gear.

Just to let you know what happened: turned out it was a bad conncection on the battery-to-ground; when I tried to turn the motor over by using jumper cables directly to the starter, it would barely turn it over and only at an angle, but when I eventually tried jumping through the battery, I noticed a weak connection; fixing that, it fired up like never before and is working perfectly, with the starter fully attached as it is supposed to be.

That's the reason, as soon as I get a Dexta in, I convert it to NEGATIVE ground. It either that or never let anyone other than me jump it.
I really don't care who is pure at heart, and think it should remain factory.
Starter doesn't care, generator is a matter of polarization or switching wires.
Rewiring every thing else doesn't take long.
I ditch the 2.2 Kw OEM manual bendix starter, and put a key-start system in, that are 2.7Kw starters. Next I am going to try the new gear reduction starters 3.4Kw.
I am a real Dexta, especially the Super Dexta fan. (4 of them on the farm) In that HP range, it is a very reliable tractor if you are handy with a wrench when it comes in, and fix some of the original flaws.
