Major problem...any ideas?

I would greatly appreciate any ideas on how to get this wonderful old machine running. Pretty sure its a 1954-1956 Major...doesnt want to run and heres the story: Previous owner said it runs like a champ...but has sat for 2-3 years. After putting new batteries in and cranking it over and over, she started, I drove it around for 15 minutes or so then parked it, seemed to idle fast, but ran. I changed the fuel and oil filters, added new fuel with cleaner additive, new oil, and replaced tranny oil, also new oil in air filter...
primed and bled fuel line and got ready for her show of gratitude...cranked her over and over till she started....engine raced even throttled down, put her in gear and went back and forth a bit and the engine calmed down some in gear, almost weak though...push in the clutch and she would RACE!...back in gear and she died...I did this routine a couple times, adjusting the fuel intake screw...no change, also adjusting the diaphragm screw...no change...racing engine but dies in gear...hard to start even warm...? Thank you in advance for your time. This tractor would help a number of people in my neighborhood..

Sounds like something in the injector pump think you can take the side plate off and change the oil in it, or it could possibly be empty something in there sticking for sure. Another possability is the diafram for the govener has a hole in it. They are reasonably priced from this sight and not too difficult to install. Hope this helps.

Heehee, didnt know there was oil in the injector pump, this is good, change that out. Diaphram appears to be sound. Seems I have fried the starter cranking it so much, any suggestions on starters...rebuild, new? Thanks a bunch

Don't know on the starter but I bet a new one would be pricey. Best bet would be to rebuild the one you have or have a reputable shop do it.

could be a time problem with the pump or more likely something in the fuel pump is stuck but also check the air intake control as that is how they controlled the speed on those engines

Thanks you guys, the pump was bone dry so I added oil and am saying that will fix it...having hooked everything back up, now I get a click at the solenoid, nothing at the starter and smoking battery cables...! This would be a short wouldnt it? Anyone know of a good diagram to completely rewire correctly? (all the wires look pretty rough anyway)
