Fordson Super Dexta Fuel Pump Problem

My 1962 Super Dexta has stopped running.
There is plenty of fuel getting to the fuel lift pump from the tank but the lift pump "feels" as if it is not pumping. I can get fuel to the 2 bleed screws by cranking the engine, but no further, to the injector pipes after loosening on top of the injector pump and on the injector. Also the cold start button will not stay in.
Any ideas??

You may have a blocked tank filter in the tap, have you taken the feed pipe out of the fuel pump and checked that you have a good flow?

It could also be the valves in the lift pump and you may need a replacement pump.

The throttle needs to be about half open to get the cold start to stay in. Try moving the stop control backwards and forward, this may release the excess fuel (cold start) button, they sometimes stick and this will stop fuel flow to the injectors when trying to start. Try pulling the excess fuel button with a pair of pliers at the same time as you move the stop control.

It is also possible that the rack in the pump has stuck. Clean around the side plate on the pump carefully, then remove the side plate and try moving the rack that moves the delivery valves with a screwdriver.

May be teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, if so, my apologise but you do know that you cannot bleed the injector lines by pumping the primer pump? You can only use that to get air free fuel to the filter and injection pump bleed screws.

E Morris, Your problem is most likely the shut-off under your tank. If your shut-off is the original one that came with your tractor, it will have the cold start on it. More than likely, it is stopped up. I do not know of any way to clean it out. I have tried to clean a couple of them out with no luck. The best way to find out if that is your problem, is to take your two lines loose, and remove the shut-off from the tank. Then buy a cheap $12.00 one from your dealer for a 2000 Ford. With this cheap one for the 2000, you will not be able to hook up and use the cold start line. But you will be able to tell if this will make your tractor run for only $12.00. If this solves your problem, then you can decide if you want to spend the extra money for the correct shut-off for your super dexta as they are a lot more expensive. If you have any questions on how the shut off for the 2000 Ford will work on super dexta let me know as I have suggestions for that as well. Hope this helps, Bob

Hi Fatbob50
Thank you for your reply re. fuel pump problem.
The fuel supply going into the pump seems fine (have taken the inlet off and the flow is full pipe), so am looking at other options.

Hello Majorman
Thank you for your comments re. Fuel Pump Problem.
The flow coming into the pump seems fine (full bore on the inlet pipe from tank).
I'll try your suggestion to loosen the cold start button then have a look at the rack movement.
My feeling is that the lift pump is not working as it should (no pressure when pumping), and yes I do know that you need to crank the engine to get fuel past the injector pump (but in this case no fuel coming through).

Many thanks

I have a similar problem. I have 5 Dextas, one of them is a Dexta, and the rest are supers.
One of my project tractors has similar symptoms. However, I can pull it off and it runs fine. Cranking on it will not start it. (new starter & battery and fast spin)
Compression is good, so good, that Must use 6th gear and must be on asphalt or it will just slide. Runs perfect once started.
perfect flow from tank (new valve with preheater fitting), new pump. It should not be the injector pump, since it not rotary, but inline, but I am leaning that way. Injector pump.
Will follow your thread, if you solve your problem it may help me with mine.

As I re-read your issues, I agree with the other fellas. Your pump diaphram sounds weak. I installed a new pump and when I spin the starter, fuel shoots out the bleeders with force. I have also had injector pump racks to freeze up with rust on new project tractors I take in. Take the cover off the side, spray with penetrant and use a vice grip to slide it until it slides freely.

Watching your thread. Good luck.
