Fordson Dexta stuck in gear

Can anyone help me?? I was getting ready to put the Dexta up from bush hogging. Stopped and was going to shift into reverse and went to 2nd instead. Went to shift into reverse and only the shifter moves around, (the shifter moves around but will not go into any other selection). The trans is stuck in 2nd gear. The hi / lo shifter works.

I am figuring I am going to have to take the gear selector off the top of the trans case. What then?????

Has any one on hear ever run into this before?? Please help!

Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!!

-Place Hi-Low in Neutral
-Remove four bolts with 1/2" wrench.
-Use wrench or screwdriver to neutralize shifter untill they are side-by-side.
-Align shifter bottom levers to best fit dimple for hi-low and slot for shifter.
-move shifter base and levers until bolt holes align and place bolts and holes and start threads.
-Tighten one bolt snugly then all tight.

FROM NOW ON - use PERFECT "H" pattern shifts and it won't happen again.

keep a 1/2" box end wrench on tractor and repeat above steps with each shifting accident.

If you feel confident, do the temp fix in the URL below. The only true fix is new bearings, mostly on the bottom shaft or a complete transmission rebuild. Water in the Gear Oil is the often culprit for premature bearing wear. Change fluid.

Thank you so much for the information!! I will try to do the repairs this weekend. Will I need to put a gasket seal / sealant around on the shifters when I bolt the cover back down??? Hopefully it will not be as difficult as I thought it would be.

I really liked your "Dexta Page" lots of good info & great photo's. Will let you know how everything goes.

Charlie,
No need for a new gasket. Wipe it down with wrag and reassemble. After repeated shift issues, a new set of bolts are in order.

I did that page in 2004 while I lived in NC, and haven't touched it since, now living for last 7 years in VA. Some of the parts I stated I was having problems getting then are as common as corn and cheap as dirt now on the internet.

I just bought another Super Dexta, that I pick up next week. Haven't even picked it up and I ordered a new starter, and will replace the TACH and TEMP gage. That is now a standard modification for me, another is to rewire the regulator for negative ground. I always replace the seats with a suspension seat with arms. I always add a remote, too.

Looking for a tap to change the fuel heater over to the MF/Ford 1000 series all in one glow plug assembly.

Darn handy little tractors on my farm.
