A "Major" doesn't have worm gears. Only the "F" and "N". The E27N began in 1945 with spur gearing that lasted thru 1964. If you are trying to pull-start the later tractors, put it in one of the higher gears so you don't have so much resistance.
You don't want to try pull-starting worm gear tractors. They might break.
If you are gentle, you can move one in neutral. Some recommend removing the worm through the lower housing cover.
You must use worm-gear oil, which might have been whale-oil originally, now made from land animal fats, etc..
Some N's had highway gears which were much faster.
