The original subject was "just a few fordson questions".

We pulled our Major about 100 feet last weekend and what was said about the worm gears now makes sense. It was a bear to get rolling (Yes we had it in neutral), but pulled OK once we got it moving. Only pulled at about 1 mph, if even that. Just had to get to the garage. Drove it about 3 hours later, and so far seems like no damage done. But after reading this, I would be very hesitant to do it again!

A "Major" doesn't have worm gears. Only the "F" and "N". The E27N began in 1945 with spur gearing that lasted thru 1964. If you are trying to pull-start the later tractors, put it in one of the higher gears so you don't have so much resistance.

You don't want to try pull-starting worm gear tractors. They might break.

If you are gentle, you can move one in neutral. Some recommend removing the worm through the lower housing cover.

You must use worm-gear oil, which might have been whale-oil originally, now made from land animal fats, etc..

Some N's had highway gears which were much faster.
