blow-by on new rebuild (fordson dexta)

BWOODS

New User
I JUST REBUILT MY 1958 FORDSON DEXTA. I REDONE THE WHOLE ENGINE, EVERYTHING NEW EXCEPT THE CRANK WITCH CHECK OUT OK, HAD SLEEVES DONE AT MACHINE SHOP AND DONE THE HEAD ALL NEW PARTS. NOW FOR THE PROBLEM, WHEN I CRANKED IT THERE IS ALOT OF BLOW-BY COMEING OUT OF THE VALVE COVER THROUGH THE VENT PIPE WITH A LITTLE OIL TOO, AND ALSO IT IS PUSHING OIL OUT OF THE DIP STICK, A PRETTY GOOD DRIP. IT RUNS GOOD AND SOUNDS GOOD. WILL IT CLEAR UP WHEN EVERYTHING SEALS OR AM I GOING TO HAVE TO START OVER ???

Take it out and work it hard don't overload it but make it work. Work it for 20 minutes then idle for 5 then work a little harder for 30 then idle for 5 etc after a few hours the rings should be broke in.

Never worked on one before so I don't know what the rings look like, but all the rings I have installed on other engines have a mark on them, to show the top side of the ring. You did install the rings the right way? Don't know how much that would contribute to excessive blowby if they were installed upside down.

If you put the rings in upside down, you will get blowby. There should be a bevel on the inside of the ring. This normally needs to go up so that the compression pushes the ring out and seals the cylinder better.

thank you !! if they had a bevel side i missed it, and i was looking hard for one, i hope i don't have to pull that thing back apart ????

Do you have the manual? one and two and one oil ring are conventional. Number 3 and one oil ring must be installed in a particular manner.

What do you mean " had sleeves done at machine shop"?? If they just 'cleaned them up' and you re-used the original pistons, that could be your problem.
Just wondering.

you hit the nail on the head !!!! i tore it back down and russell tractor sold me the wrong rings, i guess it's my fault for not checking the ring gap, that's what getting in a hurry will do for you. i had 3/8" ring gap.
