Hi. I just wanted to say I don't know much about old fordsons but like ford tractors and others as well. so this might seem kind of dumb question to some of you.
I read on here before about not pull starting old fordsons because they are worm gears and it would ruin them. Is that when its in neutral too?
what would you do if it quit on you and had to pull it to where you wanted to work on it? or before you started to restore one.

Scott, I don't have an answer for you. I don't know anything about Fordson, but haven't heard about the worm gears. I am watching this post to learn something new.

Even in nuetral you will be exerting the same damaging pressure on the drive shaft. So to move it a short remove spark plugs and use the starting handle. To tow it for any distance remove the drive shaft.I've coloured it red in the diagram by taking off the back plate. I oce got away with towing but never again. Hope the gearbox pics come out ok MTf

You can pull the Fordson tractor around slowly to move it or pull it onto the trailer. I have been dragging them around my place for years. Technically, you are not supposed to be able to run a worm gear in reverse. At this very moment engineers in Pa. are still trying to figure out how the Fordson is able to do it.
As for pull starting, I've seen it done but I wouldn't do it with mine.....

I used to pull-start mine all the time, usually after cranking for a half-hour or more. Didn't know you couldn't do it.
