lift pump E1a Major

Hi, I have a Fordson Major E1a, approx 1953/4, where with lift/fuel pump attaches to the engine block it constantly leeks at the bottom , I unbolted the two bolts that hold the pump and removed from the engine and found behind the pump there was a metal gasket, which has the two bolt holes there however, there is nothing to fix to the engine block hence it cannot seal and leeks engine oil at the bottom on where the lift/fuel pump is, without this metal gasket there is a big hole, does anybody know what should be behind the lift/fuel pump to seal it. Please Help...... Thanks Mark

Howdy Mark:

I have a 1961 Fordson super major with the lift pump having the glass bowl on top, it leaks engine oil right now as well and the thing is for my pump at least is that the seal below the diaphram is cracked, that little seal holds back the engine oil from entering the pump chamber, once it fails the engine oil makes it"s way into the bottom of the chamber and then leaks out of a factory made hole.
Just like the holes on automotive water pumps have, it"s a way for the owner to know when the seal has failed...Now i"m not sure if yours is the same as mine, but i know since my Super Major is an early model of the SM line, it still uses the older style pump that the major and the power major models used...This website has a parts section for all kinds of makes and models and it seems that they have a fuel lift pump repair kit for the Fordson Major"s...Also Agriline is another dearler that specialize"s in majors also. Brim as well, but they do not supply all the parts...I have not bought the kit yet mearly because i don"t know if they include that peticular seal or not...
If you happen to give it a try, i"m interested on how it turns out...

Hope this helps a little...

Hi, I own a 1955 FMD, the gasket between lift pump and block is a paper gasket and no leaks, are you sure you have the right lift pump for that tractor as the hole in the side of the engine for the lift pump should be completely covered by the lift pump casing.
