OEM Solenoid finally gave up the ghost and couldn"t get another factory part. Had to use a modern 4 post solenoid. Started fine the first time. Second time the starter disengaged when I let off on the lever but the starter motor kept spinning until the battery was drained. When the tractor is running at idle the dash lights barely flicker and go out completely as the RPM"s go up. When I kill the motor, the dash lights glow brightly like they are supposed to. Any Ideas?

I assume we are talking about a Major. If so my thoughts are: - At first glance this would not actually appear to be a solenoid fault. Even if your solenoid is unserviceable it cannot pass current through an open circuit. Therefore I would suspect that the switch at the end of the lever is not breaking and still allowing current to flow. So next time disconnect the 'in' wire and see if that cures it. Theres a wiring diagram posted about one week back that should help to identify the wire I mean. Hope this helps MTF

Thanks Mike. The new solenoid I installed was sticking. Using the tried and true method of whacking it with a screw driver handle and th estater quit spinning :) I took it back and exchanged it and installed that and the starter sems to work fine. Stil baffled by the idiot light problem. Must have something to do with the generator. THe lights glow just fine when th eengine isn't running but as son as I start it the lights go dim. When I up the RPM's they go out all together. WHne I shut the engine off the idiot lights go back to glowing properly. weird.
