Any advice on a good supplier for top end gasket set for the engine? Quality more important than price. There is a Ford/NH dealer about 20 miles away if need be.

Be careful here. There were several different combinations of pistons and sleeves and they all called for different head gaskets. If the top of the sleeve is flat and the top of the piston is less than .008 below the top of the head at topmost travel, then use the "thick, composition" gasket. Costs about $120.00. If the piston doesn't come up that high (different piston design), then use the "thin, composition" gasket. Early engines used a copper asbestos gasket with sleeves that had a smaller diameter sticking up into the gasket. However, they used a thick composition gasket with the "taller" pistons. These had a smaller ring that fit around the protrusion on the sleeve, called a "spigot" in English terminology. I think you might have performance problems if the wrong gasket is used, but some of the older ones may not be available. New sleeves and pistons will have changed the picture compared to original equipment.

I've removed the cyl head and taken it to the machine shop for dismantling, cleaning, checking for cracks, valve grind and reassembly. It had a copper head gasket and the piston's are way down in the hole. The liner's protrude above the block surface. If the head checks out OK, I'll be ordering parts to reinstall everything. Thanks for the advice on different gasket combinations.
