Possible PTO Issue

Hi Folks,

Dad has a 1962 Fordson Dexta (09B716466), gasoline engine, with a live PTO.

The other day dad was bush-mowing (I believe 6-7 foot diameter), when the blade stalled and literally stopped spinning. After quickly depressing the clutch and disengaging the PTO he removed the obtruction and carried on.

He mentioned that the tractor was very difficult to get into gear, in fact having to grind(!) force the gear lever unless he got out of the seat and depressed it as far as possible. This problem is very new, as I tuned it up just prior and experienced no such problem.

When I looked at it, I ajusted the clutch pedal per the Service Manual, then tested it. It was slightly improved, but still the clutch assembly is not fully disengaging to allow inserting into (any) gear.

After tinkering a bit more, when engaging the PTO the tractor produced what can best be decribed as two gears which were on the verge of NOT meshing. What I envision is either a shaft has broken which is allowing the gears involved to deflect and therefore make noise, or something within the double clutch assembly has been compromised by the sudden stop during the bush mower incident.

I"m about to separate the cases and investigate. I have a rather good Service Manual for this lovely tractor, the other question is going to be if there is clutch and/or shaft/gear damage, what are the chances of finding the appropriate replacement parts??

Thanks in advance for your input.

Simon, parts availabilty for Dexta's is not a problem. But it depends where you are. There are aftermarket parts available new (ie sourced in the UK), or good secondhand parts in certain parts of the world. Also try "fordsontractorpages.nl" as one of there moderators has a Petrol Dexta from New Zealand.TSG.

Thank you for the input; upon further investigation I have determiend it is a clutch issue. It's likely the throwout bearing or a failure of the pressure plate finger assemblies.
W
hen the clutch pedal is depressed slightly, there is noise emanating from the bellhousing area.
