I changed the crankshaft gaskets on my power major and now it wont start I think I may have tightened some of the bolts down too hard. Can anyone shed some light on this situation.

Thanks

I also wanted to add that it will turn over and act like it wants to start if I raise the compression lever near the heads, but when I lower it down so It can get compression and start it will only do maybe a half a rotation only.

I'm not sure which gaskets you changed. There should be one on the oil pan (sump), a seal on the back of the crankshaft, and a gasket and seal on the front timing gear cover.

yes your right and I changed both. But now it seems the motor doesnt want to turn over, the flywheel wont turn. I pulled the starter and tested it and it works. What could cause the engine to seize?

It's been a while since I worked on a Fordson Major, I can"t remember if the bearing caps can be installed wrong. If the bearing caps on most engines are 180 degrees out they can bind. Some worse than others.

Hi, I've given quite a bit of thought to this one and I would think along these lines. If it appears to be turning fine when its decompressed I think its unlikely to be the caps binding. So my thoughts are maybe its something simple. So don't be insulted.I reckon that maybe your starter is just not doing its job properly for one some reason. Do you have the right quantity and the right type of oil in it. Is your battery fully charged? Does your battery have a GOOD earth?(earthing is a very common fault with these old ladies so I would disconnect the lead and scrape it and the earth point down to bare metal) is it connected the right way. Is the lead to the starter in good condition and really tight. Finally does it start with a tow. If you tow it it should start almost a soon as you let your foot off the clutch. Any other help I can give just say good luck MTF

Mike,
Not to worry, not offended. I was thinking that if a cap or two were binding a bit on crank journals that might be a bit out-of-round, it may allow the engine to turn over on low compression but with the extra effort required on high compression; a half a turn is all it gets.
