Head Gasket

I am completely rebuilding a 1962 Super major. New sleeves, pistons, pins, rings, gaskets, etc. It runs beautifully but leaks water into the cylinders. Tried a second head gasket but same thing happens. On closer inspection head gasket has no "crush marks" from head being torqued down. Protrusion of sleeve above block seems to be in spec(.002-.004). When you put a straight edge across top of sleeve rim it just barely touches head gasket so there is no pressure to restrict water leakage into cylinders. I removed sleeves and checked again to see of rim seat in block was clean and it was. Only thing I can think of is the original head gasket was thicker than what I can get now. Thought about using two head gaskets. Any ideas would be helpful.

The only thing I can suggest is:-Lay a 4mm drill down alongside the liner then put a straight edge right across the top of it. If you can move the drill you have too much liner protrusion. Have you checked to see if there are any old shims stuck in the top of the casting where the liner lip sits from previous liners.MTF

I have checked the top of the casting to make sure it is clean. This model has no shims. Protrusion is determined by thickness of rim on sleeve. I have checked the protrusion and it is about 3-4 thousanths. These are spigoted sleeves which means there is a second higher protrusion above the sleeve rim. This higher protrusion is what the head gets torqued to. Earlier models did have shims but this one doesn"t. I checked rim thickness from the new to the old sleeves and the measure the same.

My book says you must use the thick composition type gasket with 4.230 dia spigots. Part number E1ADDN-6051-E The last letter is important.

If you are using the 4.250 dia spigots, you must use a copper asbestos gasket, Part number E1ADDN-6051-C. They are no longer produced, so if you have the 4.250 spigoted sleeves you need to replace them. You also need to be concerned about the height of the pistons. In some cases you need to advance the timing of the injector pump if you are using late model sleeves and pistons in an older engine. It gets kind of complicated. My engine shop says head gaskets are a problem with Fordsons. So you need to be careful about what combinations you are using.

The old thin headgaskets can only be used with the old style non-spigotted sleeves.

Right now, I'm not sure my engine man did it right. I have a 1956 Major that I just went through. We used the thick gasket, but I honestly didn't notice if it had spigoted sleeves or not. If I have more clearance above the pistons, I'll need to advance the injector pump.

Haven't done installing it yet.
