FMD clutch replacement

hi chaps! having got life back into my Major"s engine, i am onto the clutch which is shot. i havnt done one myself but am fairly familiar with the process and am guessing i will need an alignment tool, any ideas where i can get one? Or is it possible to make something to do the job? being a typical bloke no doubt i will only start reading the workshop manual once all the parts are laying round my feet! cheers!

Hello and good luck! yes you can make an alignment tool. I have made them from wooden dowels on a lathe. Turn the large diameter down to THE INSIDE diameter of the splines in the clutch disc and of course the small diameter to the dimension of the crankshaft bushing or bearing. (Leave some clearance for a nice slip fit) Also during all of your repair work, make sure that the flywheel is FLAT. Put a straight edge across it and if not flat, remove and take it to a shop for flywheel Blanchard grinding. This procedure makes all the difference. Cheers

cool, thanks, would apprieciate any tips from anyone whose done one! ( mine's a single clutch, not live drive, on a 1955 fmd although am suspecting the engine is really off a super major!)

Richard, if you do have a super motor on that 1955 major, a word of caution, that motor has much more power than the standard motor from 55 and you will cause harm to the rest of the transmission, rear end of your tractor. I know this because I bought a (parts) tractor that had a super motor in it. The trans. was a mess. The motor had some work done to it and ran like a dream, lucky snag for me.

First thing to remember is everything is very heavy. Make sure it is securely jacked up and put blocks between the axle and engine to stop it pivioting from side to side.

I would not use a jack under the sump because it is so easy to have the engine fall off when you are pushing it apart or together. Some form of pallet lift or tractor with loader is best.

I have fitted hundreds of these clutches and you can line things up by eye rather than make a special tool. We did this and we had access to the special Ford tools. A clutch change used to take around 1 hour.

Don't worry about your transmission with a Super engine. I have seen 1200 hp put through a standard Major transmission with no ill effects, in tractor pulling.

thanks majorman, good tips, i'd have missed stabalizing engine and front axle, i thought it shouldnt be too tricky with a bit of thought! hydraulics after this-that will take some help! thanks again, richard.
