have this engine.was under the impression that they would start easy.this one will not start unless it is givin a shot of starter fluid.even under warm condition.and smokes of diesel fuel real strong.im thinging rings, any other sugestions would be nice befor i get in to deep.

Do you know about the Excessive Fuel Button on the injection pump? It sticks out where the shut off linkage connects. Just push it in and then it will reset its-self after the tractor starts. Dandy Dave!

Blowing diesel AND needing starter fluid sounds an awful lot like compression to me.But to start with I would check: - Air filter/intake make sure its clean with good oil in it and no air leaks.
Then take the side off the pump and check everthing is moving free. that SHOULD also be a good indicator that your diaphram is probably ok.
Then the timing.
Often a good indication if its rings is blowing oil from the exhaust. If you've got a small drain hole in the exhaust elbow it might blow a fine oil mist.
When its running watch the dip stick. If it blows then you need to clean the engine breather.
I expect you already tried all these things, but without getting in deep its all I can think of. Luck MTF
