pump timing and ID

hi guys, i am rebuilding a major but need help with checking the fuel pump timing. the serial no. of the tractor, stamped over the starter motor, is 1331993. the pump is a simms SPE 4A 75S 498 and currently the fly wheel is showing 23*BTDC. According to my workshop manual a major with this serial no. should have a simms SPE 4A 70S 296 (or 380) and timing mark should show 26*BTDC. i have the head off and i bought this tractor recently as a non runner so i havnt heard her run yet. I"m sure that various parts are not original to this tractor, probably including the pump but can anybody confirm the current timing settings with these details??

Rebuilt a Fordson Major 5000 last year had pump sent out to pump shop insatlled acording to book for timing and when running it was bad flame out exhaust talked with pump shop had to change timing til it would run good, run on dyno watchet smoke and exhaust temp. All works fine

Hi you are right about what it 'should have'. I reckon with this pump you would be ok to go for 26* but if you get any serious knock then shut it down to 23*. Maybe the previous owner has already been there on this problem and settled for 23* MTF

thanks to u both, guess i'll suck it and see! i should also add that i am based in the uk and i have to say that this is by far the friendliest and most helpful forum i have used, no doubt my next question will not be long in arriving!

Section 109, page 31....

"Pumps with a 7.5 mm diameter plunger must not be installed on model FMD engines prior to serial 1425097"
You can put the 296 and 380 [p/n DD-993100-A, DD-993100-B]on later engines but you cannot put the later pumps [498 Ford p/n DDN-993100-C] on earlier engines.
You can instal a pump other than original equipment but you may have to change other parts which is in the FM tractor parts list"

stiff cheddar. Are you sure there has not been other alterations to the motor.?

Yes my book reads the same, unfortunately does not give specifics for that pump fitted to your tractor. As I say I would try for 26* but if you get either Knocking or seious smoke shut it down to 23*. UK Hampshire where are you. MTF

hey bendee, thanks, i've got this info but i have now discovered that a mark three engine had a setting of 23*BTDC-what constitutes a 'mark 3'? i believe this to be a modification as there appears to have been trouble with some of the gasket mods carried out during production. i think i will have to run her up on settings i found her then take it from there, i was told by the previous owner that "she ran before she stopped"!!?? am luvin this fordson stuff!

hi mike, thanks for info,i,m gonna change head gasket like for like and start with settings as found then go from there. i'm in east sussex.

He didn't tell you why it stopped.?
There must be a reason why the book says you can't use your pump on your motor no matter how you mess with the degrees.
