sticky valve!

hi, have just bought a major 'spares or repair' got her home with advice from MTF (thanx!) she's far better than seller thought and wants to start but i'm far more cautious and trying to be thorough. On turn over, (no fuel, just testing)one valve is sticking. i want to run her up before i strip her down, just so i can see how bad or not she is. have only started on the engine today, dont want to take the head off yet so looking for any advice on one sticking b*****d valve! if ur reading this mike, my exhust fell off b4 i could blow it off with a stuck primer!

Turn the engine over slowly until the cylinder with the stuck valve is at or near top center(watch the valve action of the other cylinders), and back off the rocker adjuster on the stuck valve to get the rocker slid to the side. Soak it with the best penetrating oil you can find and tap the end of the valve stem lightly with a hammer. You want the valve to "bounce" a little with the spring pressure. Soak and tap and it should eventually loosen up. The reason for the piston being up is in case the stem lock lets go, the valve doesn't go down into the cylinder(unlikely but possible).

Thats about the only way without stripping head off. Only thing I would add is to get 'some'heat on it if possible. To avoid any burn damage I suggest wrap some rags tightly around valve stem/spring and pour boiling water over it. Leave it for a few minutes to 'heat soak' then get to work with the hammer. I also suggest you will need to have the piston at least 3/4 inch down the bore to avoid banging the valve into it.When you hit it, if it stays down just walk away and leave it. They will often come back up on their own. Tuff about exhaust pipe. MTF

thanks dave, have already ordered it from u guys, have to say though that although agriline were v.helpful with my dexta build last year, there were several new parts i had to adjust to fit and the exhust manifold took some careful grinding to get it to fit poperly between the blanking plates.

I'm not part of Agriline in any way, shape, or form. I am just glad to pass on the information to anyone who does not know. I do have a Power Major and have bought parts from them so I know that they are a good company. :) Dandy Dave!
