saving a nearly dead major

hi, i'm about to collect a dead looking major and i need some quick advice! i dont like seeing old characterful machinery disappear to the local scrapper, i have saved and rebuilt several landrovers but after saving a dexta last year i found a new purpose! i have bought a complete major, non runner, and i collect her tomorrow, her brakes are siezed on and i need a quick way to release them to winch her onto a trailer. i guess its going to be violent, i cant get the gas to her but i'm hoping you guys may have a solution? heres hoping, richard.

I've used pieces of wood under the tires and on top of boards. Put a lot of grease between them. They slide pretty well. You could use metal as well. In my shop, I've moved stuff by setting planks on three pipe rollers on each side. As you roll off one roller, move it to the front and go a little further.

Hi. welcome to yet another Major Nut. Make sure the hand brake lever is fully forward and that the footbrake lock is fully off, then,If you kick the brake pedal a few thousand times you might find that the brakes come off. Next step if possible give it a pull backwards before you tow it or winch it forward. Just get some old boards and pour old oil on them and skid it along. You might get away with water. thanks for the advice, pulled her backwards, freeing one brake then set about the other with a hammer. shes indoors first time in years! fuel system is on the bench and shes not seized up-easier than landrovers!

Sounds good to me. Did you just try to start it. Pity your fuel system is off the tractor. My last one had been standing in the corner of a field for many years but just for luck I put a battery on and it fired straight up. The cold start jammed on and it revved madly 'blew what was left of the exhauast all over the field. MTF

hi mike, thanks for the response, probably have to pick your brains over the next months! i trailered her back to my workshop and pushed her in, put a battery on her just to try, got a load of clicking from the solonoid and not much else! fuel tank is dry,the glass top to the lift pump has gone and the filter was full of crap. however, after the filter there was diesel in the system so just a good clean out should do it. got the replacement bits so i'll be sorting the fuel side tomorrow.

Guess it probably wasn't going to start then. Pick my brain any time although its getting a bit 'slack'an rusty and often I fully remember totally the wrong thing. BUT I do have a couple of good manuals and there are countless helpful gentlemen on this site. Just ask and I'll almost bet that the answer will somewhere in your replies. How about posting a pic?
