Fordson F Steering Adjustment

I have a 1927 Fordson which has about a 1/8 play in the steering wheel. It appears that the slop is in the steering quadrant within the tractor. Is there an adjustment that would lessen this play? Do I have to part the tractor to solve this problem?

Mark, you will have to pull the dash out from the transmission housing. There is a bevel gear on the end of the steering shaft which turns a quadrant which moves the draglnk back and forth. A lot of play is normal for the F Fordson. I've got one that skips a tooth now and then. Good thing it's not going down the interstate.

Mark, The play you experience can be a result of several problems. First, the bevel gear and quadrant previously mentioned are sometimes worn so badly the gears are razor sharp. Replacement would be the only fix. Second, the cast iron hole that the steering shaft fits into in the dashboard is almost always worn egg-shaped and can be line bored and rebushed. At the same time the shaft itself is almost always worn and can be welded and turned to fit. Third, the clutch and the steering shaft sometimes wear out the cast iron dash where they exit. Again these can be bored and bushed (a good time to sneak in o-rings so the leaking oil doesn't ruin your new paint. My experience is that the play is always a combination of these problems and much of it can be repaired. No need to split the tractor in any case.
