have a 254ci. diesel motor out of a Vermeer 475 trencher ...have been told that it will fit in a Major or Super Major [don't have a clue what these are]...starter left side sitting on trencher & diesel pump on right...this is a good motor but trencher is going to the scrapyard...can anyone tell me if there are any Fordson tractors this will fit?...I run all green but hate to waste a good engine...thanks ...Kent

thanks ;just thought that it might bolt up anyway ...I understand that it's an industrial engine but I don't think Ford would build a engine just for industrial use ..there has to be a tractor out there that this will fit & thinking about making a little diesel puller out of it ...take care ...Kent

The guys here may be able to tell you more.

Look on the injection pump side of the engine, up in the right hand side of the block there is a machined area with numbers stamped in it. If you post the numbers, I will see what I can find out for you. Photos would be good also. I agree, it would be a shame to scrap it. Is it a 4 or 6 cylinder? Some of the fellows have put super 6's together. Dandy Dave!

With a power unit, you may not have the correct tractor oil pan casting, so something may have to be rigged up. In the unitary tractors, the oilpan provides a lot of strength.

This would probably be the same engine as the 5000 Ford tractor used. I've never checked it out, but someone claimed that the bellhousings were standardized for many years starting with the New Major.

The 254 is the 4-cylinder variant of the 2700 series 'Dorset' industrial diesels. I've been told that they will bolt up to a Major/Super Major's bellhousing, and I saw a Super Major with either the 363 or 380 c.i. 6-cylinder Dorset at a show a few years ago. They are not at all interchangeable with the 256 c.i. in the 1968-1975 Ford 5000. (the 5000 used a 233 c.i. from '65 to early '68...basically the same as the 256, but a shorter stroke)
