injection system 57 Major

I have recently acquired a 57 Major diesel and having trouble getting it to idle. The cable that attached to the fuel shutoff lever was not connected and should there be a bracket near the end of the cable housing to clamp it? I have not been able to find a diagram showing the connection in any manuals. will try to post picture, it has what looks like a primer pump and a tach drive also not being used. Could someone tell me just what I have?
Thanks Ed

There's NO bracket for the cable SHEATH at the "front" end of the cable. None is needed.

Define "trouble getting it to idle".

Does it idle too fast or idle roughly?

If it hasn't run for a while the "rack" in the IP may be gummed up/sticky.

The governor diaphragm is another common point of failure.

Also, the "vacuum lines" from the IP to the intake manifold need to be intact and the lines and connections leak-free.

Actually it idles both too fast and rough. The way I got it to idle down was to hold the fuel shutoff down just enough to keep it running . Then it would idle as well as throttle up. Your suggestion of the diaphram sounds like a possible problem. On the cable, the coating covering the cable sheath is broken off back by the attachment at the dash, this lets the whole thing flex rather than operate the fuel shutoff lever. I imagine that I need a new cable assembly. In the picture on the next post shows the pump and the fuel stop lever. I was wondering about the pump on it that is not being used.
Thanks for the reply.
