Fordson Petrol Dexta

This tractor is a relatively rare beast and we are compiling a list of engine numbers/serial numbers and as many date codes as we can find, to try and get some idea of how many are still out there.

According to information at present, the tractor was built at Dagenham between November 1960 and close of production at Dagenham in 1964. It was sold, according to the sales leaflets, as a tractor to work in applications where a diesel was too noisy, with animals etc. or where low hours made the petrol engine preferable to the diesel.

Please e-mail me at [email protected] with any details you have.

Many thanks.

They weren't that rare here in Canada. The easy starting gas engine was better suited to our cold climate and there were lots of them here.
Most of them got cannabalized by guys wanting the motors for 35 Masseys.

Ford only built about 4000 in total.

The engine was different from the MF 35 as the starter is on the other side so they won't drop straight in to that tractor. Must have been some modifications to the clutch housing to allow the starter to fit.

It is interesting that we have found more in Australia than anywhere else, that is why we would like to find more.

Hi Majorman, just looking at my Dexta parts book but it dose not show the petrol engine. What it dose say is the petrol engine tractor wassupplied to Australia, New Zealand,Norway, Sweden, and Denmark only and refer to petrol engine supplement W1516/960, no mention of Canada. MJ

As far as we can discover at this time, the tractor was offered world wide.

But with only a small number built, they were spread rather thinly on the ground in most areas.

They were certainly offered to market gardens and factories here in England. The Ford parts book lists all the parts with a separate supplement for the engine.

We are hoping to get as much information as we can to enable more light to be shed on this tractor. There are a number in the UK but many are re-imports. Canada was certainly a big market as was Denmark.

In the book "Fordson Dexta Classic Tractor Special" by Allan T Condie Publications, 40 Main Street, Carlton, Nuneaton, CV13 0RG there are a series of photos and brief commentary on a superb Petrol Dexta restored by a Herr Hartmut Linder in Gemany. The photos show the specially lengthened bonnet and extra fuel tank. The only reference to the engine is that it was a Standard 87mm. It also confirms the different starter motor location and different exhaust manifold to the MF35. Perhaps the publishers still have contact details for Herr Linder. The German number plate on the tractor is GG 04634.

Had a customer with one 10yrs ago had a small hairline crack on dist cap could not find a cap anywhere baked it in the oven on warm sealed with epoxy and sprayed with silicone this had Lucas dist. I spent about 10 hrs looking for parts and it was no luck anywhere.

Can't figure out why anyone in Canada bought them, since the 860 Ford has proven to be a very acceptable tractor. It had 5 speed, 1 reverse, whereas Dexta had 6 speed forward, 2 reverse. 860 could have power steering, not Dexta.

Otherwise, the color, and the fact that maybe the price was less when figuring import duties.

I wonder if the dealers traded them to owners who couldn't get their diesels to start in the winter. By keeping to the Blue, the neighbors wouldn't see the difference.

"Majorman",have you noticed that a number of petrol Dextas have been confiscated,.... I mean repatriated to the UK from New Zealand? And there are more out there.I guess that petrol Dextas were suited to more horticultral applications and diesel Dextas were more suited to agricultural applications over here in NZ.TSG.
