Fordson Super Major Problems, Need help

Brought home my "new" fordson super major diesel and started playing around with it and has a few problems that I need opinions on.

It has sat outside without running for a few years now, but the engine starts and can run for a bit (enough to get it on and off the the trailer) .

Here's the problem,

When Starting it has a hard time turning over and it takes up to 30sec to get it started. When Running it blows black smoke and can rev up to full RPM and it lacks power. When running in anygear it will get going then eventually will quit running?

Also I am going to have to get new fuel filters because the feul filter was full of junk and the diesel fuel that came out was dark brown/black and very watery.

What would Cause this problems and what should I try to get the problem fixed, I am a newbie when it comes to diesels

Thanks

THERE IS A SCREEN INSIDE THE TANK ON THE SHUT OFF VALVE.IT CAN RUN FULL RPM WITH LITTLE POWER IF ITS RESTRICTED.ID CLEAN TANK AND PUT NEW FILTERS AND GO FROM THERE.GOOD LUCK.

Delete that but you may find the filter receptacle has the same substances therin.Maybe a good idea to remove the tap and drain the tank, fix the fuel first as a starter.

I took apart the engine yesterday,

I Removed the head cover everything looked good from a glance, then I started to take closer look at the head it self and discoved that the frist two (intake and exhast) push rods were bent and Some of the rocker arms were loose as well and I was wondering if that would cause the problem?

We also took the head it self off to expose the Pistons and as far as I could see they were fine but the engine was extremly hard to turn over.

Tonight I am going to finish taking apart the engine to see what else I can find.

is there any sign of unusual wear in the cylinders on one side. When you replace the head do not forget the little O ring on the block.

Black smoke means more diesel fuel than air to completely burn it. Disconnecting the air filter will prove if the filter is the cause, but be prepared to shut down the engine if it starts to rev to high. Many posts in the forums will say that trying to start the engine with the de-compression lever raised will bend pushrods- the compression release is only for turning the engine by hand.- JH
