RE: E27N serial number question
The (1950?) Fordson E27N I recently purchased is serial # 1138852.
Can you tell me what the actual date of manufacture from your list?
Thanks
Brian

The 1st serial number for 1950 is 1138235

the casting codes will give date of casting, and the tractor will normally have been assembled and given its serial number a few days later.

Many tractors will have received replacement engines during their working life, so the engine casting number may not tally with the rest of the casting numbers.

Gearbox number is just behind and below centre line of the gearlever casting [at 5 oclock] on left side of tractor

Rear axle number is low down just behind the flange joining the gearbox to rear axle. on left side of tractor

Engine block number on left side of block half way up towards the rear [ no. 4 piston area]

The first letter = month
0 - 31 = day of month
the last letter = year

for example P21A = 1950 21st day of January

If you post your casting codes on here I will date it if you are having problems identifying the date. I guess your tractor would be January 1950.

I retrieved the following from my tractor.
Thanks
Brian
Motor # P20N
Transmission # A5P
Differential # A3P

I would guess the tractor was assembled in 2nd week in January 1950, as the two codes are 1st week in January.
Your engine is much later, quite normal to change engines in service when they required rebuilding.

The engine is December 20, 1949. These casting codes can get confusing, since the month/date/year are used in different order in different parts of the world.

The early production Model F tractors were constructed and assembled in several plants around the US, and the serial numbers [and casting numbers?] dont follow any logical sequence. They used a batch of numbers for each plant.
When production was transfered to Cork in Ireland and the Model N was created, the serial numbers followed in logical order. Then the Model N was produced exclusively at Dagenham England.
The Model N, E27N, and Diesel/Power/Super [E1A] range were all all built from scratch in that factory, nowhere else. All numbers ran in sequence. The year code on E27N comemced in 1945. and the year code for the E1A range started in 1952.
The only "odd balls" that could occur is when they ran short of a component and they would use a part which had been stored in Spare Parts Dept.
But that would mean that the casting code would be an earlier one than the rest of the tractor.

When The E1A range was discontinued in 1965, the whole plant was sold to EBRO in Spain [who was part owned by Ford] and a slightly modified version of the last Super Major was produced entirely in Spain - these have different casting codes. Ford did import some parts back into England over the years from EBRO to meet spares orders. A few E1A Majors in England have been fitted with the Spanish built engines!

There's lots of good information in that post, KFD68. The E1A just continued the the year code sequence from the E27N. The first E1A was built in 1951 and the last E27N was built in 1952, so they both used year codes S and T. It would be interesting to find out the casting codes that EBRO used.
