transmition

I own a 1958 Ford Dexta. It has worked great for the last four years. I heard a grinding sound coming out of the transmition. I shut it down and checked all the fluid levels. Which checked out o.K. So I went to plow my garden and on my third pass I heard a loud pop and I lost all power. I have to hold the gear shift in third to get it to move at all. How much damage do you think I caused? Is it worth getting the Ford tractor place to fix it? Or should I just scrap the whole thing and buy a new tractor?

Hate to hear your bad luck with the tranny . Not specifically up to date on Fordsons but I'd think used parts would be the way to go if you need the complete tranny . Maybe even buy another tractor not running to make one good tractor .

Someone here will know and give you a better idea than I could . For what I paid for a few parts I'd think it would cost plenty in a shop . But who knows without tearing it down you may just need a couple bearings and a cog in that case I'd think new parts best .

Someone may be able to tell you what all trannies you might use to help open your options of getting one .

A used one on ebay is always a possability and you can go in there and place an add looking for one .

I hope some of that helps you and again sorry to hear your bad luck .

Sound like you have a bad, or multible bad bearings to me, You will have to split the tractor to repair it. To me it is worth repairing because I am capable of doing the work myself, and bearings are not that expensive. Could be other problems as well. Not sure of your capabilities. if you send it to a shop, time could get expensive. I rebearinged a ford 600 trans a few year back for a friend. Time and parts were about $1,800 for the job, bearings were around $200 to $300 at that time. Dandy Dave!

I have a Super Dexta that was bad at jumping out of gear. If it were mine I would place the shift lever in neutral then remove the 4 cap screws and pull the lever out Check to see if the forks are lined up in neutral position. They may be out of alignment due to the shift ball on the end of the lever getting out of its slot and allowing the gears to pop out of alignment under load. Look here first.

Thank you for your speedy reply and your answer to my questions. I’ve decided to have the Ford place work on it. I put a lot of sweat and labor into getting the dexta restored. I have even bought a second dexta to work on as a hobby. I plan to have twin dexta’s. Thank you for your time.
