I have power major with a unit that lets me turn the pto on or off without bothering the lift,it has a gear shift that one way the pta is on,the other way pto is off,my super major has the pto ,and the lift together either they are both on,or both off.now my question is;can I take this unit off my pm,and put it on my sm,and what is the unit called?my pm is just a parts tractor, thanks for any feedback,cw

According to the parts diagrams that I can find, they were interchangable from '52 to July '63. I think they are interchangable with the NP Supers, too but the gear ratios are different. You will need to change the PTO drive shaft, too.
What year is your Super Major?

One important thing that I forgot to mention. The shifting fork mounts on the top right mounting bolt on the raised PTO. Loosen it to take it off of the tractor, but don't pull it all the way out.

They were used, like you said, to disengage the pto seperately from the hyd. pump. The ones built before 7/63 have a 1.33:1 gear reduction, so that you can turn 540 pto rpms at 1600 engine rpm, instead of 1200. They also raised the pto shaft height, so that you had less angle on the drive shaft and u-joints of some equipment.
