would someone please explain the positions on the key switch on a Fordson Major Diesel. mine has been bypassed an just has a toggle switch to supply power to the starter switch and alternator ignition terminal.

Hi. This is what my FMD book says and its how I rewired mine a couple of years back.

Lever straight down---------Off
Lever to the right----------Side lights and rear lights
Lever to first position left------Dipped head lights, side lights and rear lights
Lever to second position left-----Headlights main beam, side lights and rear lights.
Hope this is of some help MTF

yes thank you, so is there no position for the start circuit? would that have been a seperate switch? or would it have been controlled by the key (wich mine doesnt have). as i stated mine was rewired at least once before i got it, and had a non factory switch in the middle hole, between the ammeter and key switch.

It was a single wire from the key point to the solenoid. If you want a wiring diagram my email is open. Send to me and I send you a copy by return. MTF

Further to my last. I assume you have the type of starter activated by a metal rod. The wire goes from the key switch to one of the connections on the forward end of the starter motor then from the other connection to the solenoid. Wiring diagram on its way tomorrow. MTF

Wiring diagram is on its way direct to your e address. My I&T manual has a wiring diagram on page 42. The sent one is from my copy of user handbook supplied with new tractors. Copies are available. Try [email protected] Compliments of the season MTF

There are some reproduction switches being made in Turkey. NOT very well constructed and unreliable in operation. The original switches wear, both the key and the light switch lever.
