fordson diesel shut off linkagd

I recently aquired a Fordson Major Diesel With a Lord loader. Not sure of the year. When I shut down the tractor there iss a small pin on the linkage that pops out and has to be reset by hand before the tractor will start again. Is this normal???
 
That is absolutely normal. Its always referred to as the cold start button. In summer it will probably start without it but in colder weather you will definitely need it pressed in. I certainely always use it for the first start of the day. MTF
 
This is not normal, its purpose is to inject extra fuel into engine for cold start, What it does is allow the governor spring to push the fuel metering rack past the maximum fuel delivery stop once it starts the button [or fuel stop lever on early models] should return to normal out position. Yours appears to be working in reverse.The book states ::" if control remains in excess fuel delivery position, pump should be sent for repairs;Caution, do not fasten control button or lever in excess fuel position"
They do not say the button cannot be fastened in the out position.
 
OOPS I have to say that I have just read that paragraph for the very first time and you are absolutely right. BUT mine stays in apparently quite happily until I pull the stop control. Now I ask myself should I worry--because this obviously isn't something new. I shall "wait and see" in the meantime if I was asking the question I would take your advice MTF
 
Further to this one I've just stripped my pump to dig into this and I guess that there is just enough wear to allow the rack to reposition and the button to stay in. It actually comes out about a quarter of its travel.I reckon if it was really sticking the engine would go to full revs and stay there. Don't know tha real answer but I figure that as its working I'm not going to worry about it. If it blows up I'll let you know. MTF
