Hello,
I am looking at purchasing a fordson tractor major or super major. It is in rough condition and is cheap. I need help figuring out what exactly it is and what the info is for it.
The serial number is 1388008 . it is a 4 cyn deasel with a lift 3 point and pto. It appears to have power steering. It also has a superior fully hydrolic loader. The loader supposedly works. It starts and rune fine.
What is the model of it?
What is the horsepower of this model?
was live pto optional/ standard/ available for it(i was told it has live pto)?
The steering wheel just spins freely and does not turn the wheels, is this hard/expensive to fix?
I was told the 3 point lift does not lift, is this expensive to fix?
IS this tractor worth $1000 us dollars?
thans for your time i hope you guys can help.

when farming with dad we had majors and its little brother the dexta , steering is not hard to fix or the 3 point lift , these are actually quite easy tractors to work on , dad retired and my brother still has the dexta , 1000 is a good price , i"m looking for a major as well , live pto and hydraulics were standard on these , 55 hp is what the diesels wer and 45 hp for the gas

That low a serial number means its a Fordson Major Diesel, not a Power Major or Super Major, which were later models. It has 40 horsepower. The Super Majors had 51 and the very last ones had 54. It won't have live PTO because that didn't come out until serial number 1417988. Since Majors haven't been built for 50 years, this one could be made from parts of several different tractors. Your engine is serial number 1388008, but the rest of the tractor could be newer or older. The steering could be something as simple as disconnected or broken linkage, its hard to say. A Major's 3 point hitch won't work unless the PTO is in gear. That could be the problem with this one. The price sounds a little high, except that it has a loader. The loader is probably worth $750-$1000, so I'd say its a good deal.

The steering linkage is hooked up, i believe the problem is in the steering box. the weird part is if you take and spin the wheel it spins like a record player(round round). IT may even be a sheer pin or something (if there is something like that).
I can't attached a pic i took of it. I tried but got an internal error.
So what i am hearing, it is a good price, parts are interchangeable between the models, parts should be easy enough to find. I can deal with non live pto it will just be more difficult to use a brush hog. Can this be converted to live pto?
Thanks very much for your help, i will post a pic as soon as i can. and will be on the forum a lot if i buy it. There are other problems that i will need guidance with.

In a world where nothing is certain, I would suggest that those front wheels are Super Major. But it is only a suggestion.MTF

Somebody's put the tyres on backwards, but otherwise it doesn't look too bashed about. If you sell the loader, you should have a cheap tractor!

All the best,
Richard.

I want to use the loader but i thik only the right wheel is on backwards. The bow in the center part is in on one wheel and out on the other one. I think i will have to find some pics to see what way it needs to be. and tell them to fix it before delivery.

here is a link of all the pic that i took notice of of the back and wheels tey are different distances from tractor. on is on the inside of the rim blocks and one has the center cap backwards.

Hi Mike,
In England, I think the New Majors had cast front wheels like the E27N. Over here, all the E1A Majors had stamped steel front wheels. But, like you said, nothing is certain.

The recirculating balls in the main nut in the steering box sometimes wear out and need to be replaced. Maybe these wore so far out that they fell out. Who knows? In any case, a Major steering box is not too complicated.

I plan on getting a service manual as soon as i purchase it, but where can i get parts from. Website or someone to call? I live in wisconsin in the usa.
I am going to look at it today and hopefully make a deal for it.

I just purchased it,
It has not been delivered, i need to know what is a good parts/ service manual and source for parts. I would like to tget the steering up asap. If anyone is willing to scan and email a page describing the parts of the steering so i know what to look for i would appreaciate it. I will be ordering a manual monday.
