Fordson N Flooding

My Fordson N appears to be a compilation of parts from many years as it has many early and later features. My problem is flooding. It will start if a little fuel is in the carb or if primed with ether, but as soon as the gas is opened at the sediment bowl, it floods and dies. It has the pre 1939 Zenith gas carb. The previous owner had simular problems and overhauled the carb, installing a Grose Jet instead of a needle and seat. He lived at an elevation 4000 ft. higher than me. Could the elevation difference be part of the problem; should I add gaskets under the Grose Jet to lower the float level; should I remove the Grose Jet and go back to a Viton needle and seat? What is the proper float level setting? What is the proper number of turns for the idle adjusting needle? Are there any other external adjustments to this carb? I don't see any. When it floods, the 3 and 4 plugs get wet but 1 and 2 are dry.

Terry, I have had a few Fordsons with the gas manifold and early Zenith. I'll give you my thoughts on your problem. I would use the Viton needle and seat. Remove the carb. install the needle valve assembly. Set the float so that it is level, that is, parallel with the carb body. Bench test the needle valve by connecting a feul line from a small gas container. If its leaking you will be passing feul. Elevation should be no problem and would not cause flooding. If only two cylinders are flooding and assuming you have the gasoline manifold check the valves on the underside of the manifold for proper operation. I usually put pipe plugs in mine. Butch

Thanks, Butch for responding. I will replace the Grose Jet with a needle and seat and set the float. you didn't say whether there are any other external adjustments other than the idle screw. I am not aware of the valves on the underside of the manifold, as I have not removed it, so I'm not familiar with what you are talking about. Terry
