860 Intermittent Power Issue

Ive got an intermittent issue with my 860 that Im at a loss with. The engine will be running fine for 10-15 minutes, then out of the blue itll hiccup and start running rough, missing, smoking (black smoke), backfires and loses all power. After a few minutes itll hiccup again and then go back to running smooth. Then a few minutes later its back to running rough with no power and so on. Its almost like its losing its timing and then finding it again. Carbs been rebuilt and adjusted. Timing is good (when running smooth) and Ive got spark at all 4 plugs. Checked the fuel flow and there doesnt seem to be a problem there. Im kinda at a loss here, about the only thing I havent done is pull the Breaker Plate off to check the internal weights and springs of the Distributor. Could this be the issue?

Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the reply. I checked the floats and all seemed well. They moved freely and the retaining pin isnt binding at all. Its definitely rich when it goes bad. The mixture needle is out about 1 turns and idle is out roughly 2 turns. Ill try to attach a video.

When was the last time you serviced the air cleaner?? It could be full of water instead of oil or the filter it self needs to be cleaned

Sounds electrical. I've had a problem similar, running good then stammering due to the ballast resistor. With spark ignition there are many things that need to be just right.

Thats a great point. Ive checked the oil level but its been awhile since Ive pulled the element out. Guess Ill be cleaning that tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Update, cleaned the air filter and media. Alittle bit of improvement, idling better but still running rich and rough. Still no power. Cleaned plugs & points and checked gaps. Ordering tune-up kit. Anything else I could be missing? Appreciate any advice.

Go to your local auto parts store and get a set of NGK3112 spark plugs and see if that helps. Check your point gap and make sure it is 0.025 at all 4 high spots on the distributor cam

If you find that you have to either rebuild the distributor and replace the bushings or replace it with a rebuild distributor

Your welcome. Point gap not the same at all 4 lobes can/will cause many odd problem and can have a person running around in circles trying to find the problem. BTDT and can drive one crazy

Most of those Fords have a Marvel Schebler carburetor which has just one float. How many floats does your have? What do you show for compression?

Thanks Old. Headed out to check the Distributor lobes now and get some new plugs. I can attest to your comment on running around & going crazy.

Showcrop, Havent checked compression yet, but will soon along with valve adjustments. Carb is a TSX706 with 1 float that has right & left arms/floats.

Appreciate everyones help.

Ok, I measured in the middle of the lobes and got,
#1-.025
#2-loose .025/tight .026
#4-loose .025/tight .026
#3-.025

Also checked the oil breather. Element was pretty dirty, soaking it now.

Well sound like the distributor is in good shape and not the problem. You might try a hot wire and see if the problem goes away. Use a wire fro the ignition side of he battery to the ignition side of the coil and run it. If the problem goes away you have a problem in the wiring from the battery to the coil

Update. Before I tried the hot wire, I traced the coil ignition wire back to the Generator and found these 2 connections. 1 fell off when I removed the nut and the other was held on by 1 or 2 wires. Replaced both connectors and fired it up. Its now got a fairly smooth idle, w/ an occasional stumble and puff of smoke. Hoping that tweaks to the Carb and Timing along w/ the tune-up kit will get me back out into the pasture. If Ive missed anything else, please let me know. Truly appreciate all the help. Thank you.

A poor connection at the generator should be the problem since on a good battery one can run a tractor for a good many hours. Your problem could well be a little dirt/rust in the carb causing the float needled ot not close as i should at all times

I'm going to say your coil is going intermittant. I've had that happen before, and as the coil warms, it starts missing the pulse output.

If you can swap the coil to test do that. Check for correct 6 or 12V and if it has an integrated resistor or not.
