860 with flat running boards

As a kid I remember seeing a 850/860 with flat running boards. The cap holding the ball at the rear end of the radius rod has a bracket made on it which supports the front of the running board and attaches to it. Why were these running boards different and when did they change?

1955 models only.

The 55 models (only) also had fender brackets similar to those used on 8Ns and NAAs.

So the Powermaster decaled 860 with the piston pump, 1 3/8s PTO shaft and SAE standard drawbar came with the 1956 models?

Powermaster-decaled 800-series first came with the 1957 models, probably late 1957 models when Ford was busy working on the switch to the 801-series.

And to my way of thinking, the curved up steps was part of the change that came in the 1957 model change. Thus the '55 & '56 models both had flat step plates, no paper proof, just from memory since I worked at a Ford dealership from 1957 to 1964. There probably is no actual proof for the situation, other than questionable memory by some of "old coggers"

As Dean said, flat running boards were a 1955 feature only. The flat running boards also have two mounting bolts at the rear of the running boards while the later x01 running boards only have one mounting bolt at the rear.

Were the flat running boards only on 660, 860, and 960 or were they also used on the
650, 850, and 950? Would it have something to do with needing extra travel on the
clutch pedal for the double clutch to function? If I remember correctly there was an
update on the pressure plate/clutch which required some machining or grinding on the
flywheel for it to accept the updated pressure plate. If that memory is correct would that change correspond to the date that the flat running boards were discontinued? It sounds reasonable that the
finger height on the PP could be adjusted differently to require less travel of the
clutch pedal and still function as a double clutch and not require the flat running
boards.
I have 2 1955 860's with flat running boards and just wondered why they were
different. I think they look good because they are different and I like finding
things that are different.
Thanks for your input and opinions.

I don't have an answer for you but the parts book is interesting. It doesn't show the flat running boards as a part, but acknowledges that flat fenders were used in 1955 - see the top insets and items 6, 13, and 14.

I did not say that.

What I said was that flat foot boards and N series type fender brackets were used on 55 models only. I have heard (but cannot confirm) that the footboards were changed late in the 55 model year.

Also interesting as the master parts catalog shows the rear mounting bracket for the running board having two mounting screws, but for the x01 series, there is only one mounting hole. Both my 58 841 and 59 641 have only one mounting screw at the rear mounting bracket of the running board.
