Ford 950 Overheats Update

So I tore it all down, and put it back together with a new radiator and water pump from Dennis Carpenter and a new thermostat and gasket from CNH. Started it up and still hotter than hell sitting there at a fast idle. Looked at everything harder and finally realized it was running lean as can be. After much poking, I found that the fuel line at the top section where it is made of rubber had decomposed inside at the bend and was blocking fuel flow except for a trickle. Just enough fuel was flowing to keep it running. So it looks like I need to makeup a new fuel line to get things going again.

(quoted from post at 14:13:05 09/16/18) Ill bet that 6 blade fan is noisy, I used to have one, you might be able to go back to a 3 blade now.

Yes it is quite noisy! This was already on it back when I first got it.

I have a 960 and I made a new fuel
line out of steel brake line. No
rubber parts in it now.
Crazy how hot a tractor will run
if it's lean,or if timing is off.

I made new fuel lines for two of mine with steel brake line, with a five inch section of rubber fuel line to allow flex.

That's what I'm going to try. Stopped by NAPA yesterday afternoon and picked up a 20" length of 1/4" brake line.

I cannot believe that the fuel line is causing it to overheat.

Have you VERIFIED that the temperature gage is accurate?

an't speak experience on lean, but sure thing on late ignition timing!

Bingo, Jmor. That will do it.

So will a non functional centrifugal advance.

That said, experience has taught me that it's usually the gage or worn pump impeller.

After swapping out the fuel line for one without the trickle flow, everything was fine again. TEMP gauge is working great!

I guess it was running like a blow torch. Now you can unload that noisy fan. I keep mine in case I have a hot runner sometime. A heat sensor gun is the thing to keep in your toolbox, you can check a lot of things that might make heat.

The muffler was hot as can be to the point where the fuel tank got so hot, I was seeing vapors pouring out the vent!
I just bought one of those thermometers from the local Harbor Freight for about $25.

Well John, I hope that you have found and solved the problem but it is hard to believe that a fuel line could be restricted to just the right opening that it could take the place of the float valve.

Well that was the thing, it was slower than the float's valve, so it seemed to be somewhat okay at idle, but could not keep up at higher RPMs.
