Attempting to time my 3000 I find the dist is advanced as far as possible. Is it possible to loosen lift and rotate the dist to gain a little more advancement.
I don't know what was done by the PO but I need a little more adjustment room. I just want to make sure I don't screw something up by lifting the dist to gain a tooth or two. Thanks from this old putterer.

No, as long as it reengages the oil pump shaft your ok... pull it,,, move the rotor as needed, drop the dist back down carefully to sit over the hexagon oil pump shaft, and your good to go. Make take a try or to to get the dist where you need it and the timing on....

OR... just move each plug wire around one hole and then you will need to move it backwards a bit.

This will work, but if there is a 1 stamped on the dist cap, it will now be in the wrong position... where there is no #1 stamped on the cap, its easier to move the plug wires back one hole. And/or remark the #1 on the cap.

Why not just loosen the bolt labeled 45 in the picture below and rotate the distributor body relative to the adjustment plate.

+1 to what Sean says. The slotted adjustment hold down clamps to the distributor body, no need to pull it out, loosen that #45 and move it so the slot is in the middle of it's adjustment range.
