converting 1957 Ford 641 workmaster to electronic ignition

tractor not starting. Points were burnt up so I figured it was time to switch to electronic ignition. There were no instructions in the box with the ignitor electronic ignition kit. Is there anything important to keep in mind? Any specific way to make sure it is timed correctly? It is installed but not working.

tractor has been switched to 12 volts previously.I have the coil that was on it and I bought one at tractor supply. Im a little confused as to what coil I need. Can anyone help me out with that as well

1244A for ignitor

The coil on it was a Regitar RUC15 R08. It says no external resistor required, but I searched online and could not find the ohms rating. The one I bought at tractor supply Says Standard 805 12 volt no external resistor required and is rated at 3.25 ohms

.25 Ohms is fine. 1244A can be used on tractors with either CW or CCW rotating distributors. Your tractor is CW rotating, so mount the module plate with the set of holes that place it in the most CCW position.

That is one of the most often used claims by fellas with non-starting issues and "figuring" to convert to 12V and/or add EI. Root cause problem solving would determine that something isn't wired correctly if you are 'burning up' points. I would troubleshoot the problem before adding another unknown into the equation. Just because your tractor had 12V in it when you bought doesn't mean it was wired correctly then. Which alternator are you using, the 1-wire or the 3-wire? Is there a voltage regulator still in the circuit? Also, there are a handful or less of decent parts suppliers and TSC ain't one of them. Don't let the name "TRACTOR" dissuade you. They have very little do with tractors nowadays being mainly glorified/overpriced hardware and pet food stores with a few cowboy hats tossed in. 99.98% of all non-starting/non-running issues are due to bad/incorrect wiring jobs whether 6V/POS GND or 12V/NEG GND. There is nothing wrong with adding EI either, but if you are burning up points now, that should be a huge clue something is wrong, and it ain't the points. Realize EI will eliminate having to mess with points but you still need to PM on the tractor/system. This pictogram by JMOR may help.

He has a 641, not an 8N AND even for the 8N, I do not like that diagram because it is not a net reading ammeter connection. i.e., ammeter as shown will read only alternator output (not battery charging current) and never show any load draw from battery. You might be thinking, "then why does that diagram exist?". Because various people have asked me to make a diagram that reflects their whims/desires & I have done so and once on the World Wide Web, I have no control over diagrams. When folks are going to propagate the diagrams that I generated, I do wish that they would use the diagrams on N*T*C under HOW TOs. They all use net reading ammeter connections or voltmeter (user's choice).
 
well.. seems you have the correct coil.

are you sure you have power to the module? ( and no resistor hidden anywhere? )

do you have the module hooked up to the coil?
 
Well it has been running fine for sometime after the 12 volt conversion (years). It is negative ground. It still has the voltage regulator. I had the original 6 volt generator rebuilt into a 12 volt generator. I have not had problems with the points burning up regularly. It would not start and the spark seemed real weak so I tried replacing the coil and some wires then I had no spark. Possibly at some point during this process might have been when I burnt the points up by forgetting to turn the key off or maybe it was the problem all along. So then I took it to my mechanic who has been working on it and becoming frustrated. He said the points were burnt up so decided to install the electronic ignition. Otherwise he would have tried to get it running first.

As I said before, be sure module mounting plate is installed for CW distributor rotation (see photo). Wiring with your 3.25 Ohm coil (no external resistor) is very simple as shown.

Yep realized it was the wrong one after I posted but no way for me to me retract it. I still fail to understand why folks do a 12V switch over job and keep the generator, 6V or 12V, and also the VR. To me the major reason to switch to 12V is to eliminate the genny and VR and use the more modern alternator. Might just be me, but that's how I view it.

Then this pictogram should be the correct one, right? All side mount distributor electrical systems are similar from the NAA on up. A 600 is just a glorified NAA. If this GD site allowed sharing links to your WIRING PICTOGRAMS and on the important data stored at the EN-TEE-CEE tractor site, then we wouldn't have to jump thru hoops trying to get the information to folks like this. It's all about sharing and helping out tractor owners especially newbies. It ain't a competition so why the admins here feel threatened is beyond me. It's Stupid.

All good points but it doesn't change the Fact that the owners there left this place with a lot of hard feelings on both sides. That board has little good to say about this place. This place
doesn't allow linking to that one. That's just how it is.
This continued ranting about it reminds me of the people with TDS. If they just accept reality and get over it they'll be happier.
