Hydraulics, or not....

Ford 4000, diesel, SoS, hyd loader; hydraulics were always hit and miss over the last several years, they would work for a while, then stop working for 5-10 minutes, then work again for a while, repeat. Worse when weather was cold. Was on a sidehill recently, left side on the high side, hydraulics haven?t worked since that day.
Any ideas?

Thanks

Is it a 3 cylinder 4000 or a 4 cylinder 4000?

Which hydraulics aren't working, the loader hydraulics or the 3 point lift hydraulics?

(quoted from post at 20:49:52 09/10/18) Which cover is the 3-point lift cover?

Thank You

The large plate on top of the rear axle center housing that the seat is bolted to and that has the upper 3 point lift arms and control handle for the 3 point as well, and likely the hydraulic adapter or remote valve that is powering the loader.

Another possibility is that the suction line for the pump is now sucking air, which would most likely be a dried out o-ring at one end or the other of the suction line that is the larger of the two lines that go from the right side of the center housing up to the pump on the left side of the rear of the engine.

Guess I'll be unbolting that to get in there.
Does the seat need to come off?
Or is it just the "plate" and valve that splits the hydraulic pressure to either go the the three point, or to the loader?

There are two round plates behind and one below the foot rest on the left side(as I'm sitting in the seat). Would taking one of these off allow me access to the suction screen?

Thank You

The entire top part of the rear axle housing needs to come off. Have a friend help you, or better yet, use a chain hoist. Start by taking the seat off, as you will use the seat mounting bolts as your pull point if you use a hoist. You cannot access said screen through the side cover plates.

Have the hydraulics working again. Drained the old hyd fluid out, only had five gals. Poured in five gals diesel. Drained, didn?t look too bad. Put in a fresh five gals of diesel; stuck an air hose in the fill hole, got it down into the diesel and fed high pressure air into it to stir the diesel around to hopefully flush any gunk off of the pickup screen. Did that several times, drained the diesel, had a black tint to it.

Put in 8+gals of fresh hyd fluid. Still didn?t work when I fired up the tractor. Played with the splitter and hyd lever, nothing. Pulled the plug on the pump, some oil came out, then nothing. Left the plug out, fired up the tractor again, played with the splitter valve, finally oil coming out of the pump plug. Put it back in, let more fluid slowly seep out, then tightened the plug. Hydraulics now working.

Thank You for all of your advice.
